The Municipal Building Authority of Emery County is comprised of Commissioners Gary Kofford, Jeff Horrocks and Drew Sitterud, along with two community members Randy Jensen and Sharon Jensen. At its October meeting, the MBA awarded two bids for the Huntington Airport renovation project.
The bids had been opened in commission meeting earlier in the day, and Craig Johansen of Johansen and Tuttle Engineering, prepared the detailed abstracts of the bids for the MBA to consider. In the abstracts, each portion of the project and the materials needed to complete the project, were listed with a unit price attached.
This phase of the Huntington Airport project included two separate projects. The first is the utility improvement project and the next is the hangar erection project.
For the hangar erection project, two bids were received, from Stilson Construction of Orangeville and Kay General Contracting from Payson. The breakdown in the abstract showed a difference of $4,935 between the bids. Johansen’s recommendation was to accept the low bidder for this project, which was Stilson Construction with a bid of $414,202. The MBA approved to award the bid for the hangar erection to Stilson Construction.
For the utility improvement project, three bids were received, from Precision Excavating of St. George, George W. Johansen Construction of Ephraim, and Oliver Excavation from Evanston, Wyo. Johansen again recommended the bid be awarded to the lowest bidder which was Precision Excavating. The MBA approved the award. Precision’s bid was nearly $80,000 under the high bidder.
The combined total for these projects for the Huntington Airport improvement is $593,073.50. This phase of the Huntington Airport improvement project is a continuation of work being done at the facility. As funding provides, more projects are expected to be undertaken.
In other business conducted by the MBA, a certificate of substantial completion was signed for the Green River Senior Center project. Approval was also given for a service contract with Rocky Mountain power for the Children’s Justice Center in Castle Dale.
The MBA discussed future projects with the intent of formulating a list to be submitted to the Permanent Community Impact Fund Board. Projects on that list are: Emery Care and Rehab Center improvement; fire trucks; a building for the Emery County Food Bank; landscaping at the pool; completion of the airport improvements; a building for Search and Rescue; a building for the weed and mosquito department; funding for communications improvements; a kitchen for the Huntington Senior Center; a visitor center kiosk; and improvements at the Museum of the San Rafael. Each of these projects was given a rating of its priority and immediate need. The list will now be submitted to the PCIFB.
Due to a conflict with the November meeting date and election day, the November meeting for the MBA will be held Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. in the commission chambers.
