Emery High School Play
The drama class will present Boo, a Halloween play on Oct. 28-30. The audience will be guided through various rooms in the auditorium. Program begins at 7 p.m. Watch for future productions, in November. Man of La Mancha, in January, more beginning drama plays, in February, Snoopy will be presented, and in May, a yet unnamed play will be given. Arbor Day Foundation Offers two Free Give-A-Tree Cards to New Members in October
The Arbor Day Foundation is offering for the first time two free Give-A-Tree Cards to those who join the foundation during the month of Oct. Every Give-A-Tree Card honors the recipient with a tree planted in one of our nation’s forests. At the same time, Give-A-Tree Cards help the environment by replanting trees in a forest that has been devastated by disease and record wildfires. On the inside, each card is inscribed, “In your honor, a tree has been planted in a National Forest.” Each tree planted will give back to the forest, provide food and habitat for wildlife, help clean the air, and protect water supplies. Just by sending loved ones and people you care about Give-A-Tree Cards, people can make a big difference in the world today. Give-A-Tree Cards are helping to bring life back to our nation’s forests. The cards will be sent to new members in time for the holidays. Annual Farm Bureau Banquet
The annual banquet and business meeting of the Emery County Farm Bureau will be held Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Huntington Senior Citizens Center. Keynote speaker will be Randy Parker, CEO of the Utah Farm Bureau Federation. Ray Petersen, Emery County Public Lands Director will give a brief overview of the BLM resource management plan as it relates to local grazing permits, existing roads, etc. Information will also be presented on updated insurance programs and Farm Service Agency’s first time farmer loan programs. Huntington City Fall Clean-Up
Oct. 31 will be the last limb pick-up until the spring clean-up. Dumpsters will be at the rodeo grounds, do not place anything on the ground. The Emery County Landfill is requesting these items not be place in the dumpsters: tires batteries oil no liquid of any type such as paint, turpentine, etc., pesticides, cement refrigerators. A $12,000 fine could be imposed for violation of these guidlines.
Study Abroad Program Blend Spanish Immersion, Biology and Costa Rica
The Interamerican University Studies Institute is offering a Spanish immersion summer program in Costa Rica, for high school students who are interested in environmental biology. Costa Rica ¡Pura Vida. combines intensive language instruction, individual homestays and field trips to three areas of the country. Students will experience unspoiled national parks, a marine biology sanctuary open only to scientists, a village of 12 families in the midst of the Cloud Forest, and birds, animals and tropical flora beyond compare. The program is open to student’s ages 15-17 with two years of high school Spanish and a course in biology (by June 2009). Scholarships available. The scholarship application deadline is Dec. 5. CASA Volunteers Needed
Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Christmas tree permits
The Manti-La Sal National Forest is proposing a fee increase for Christmas tree permits that are sold. This fee increase will put the permit fees in line with what the Ashley, Uinta, Dixie, and Fishlake National Forests are charging for permits. As proposed, Christmas tree permits on the Manti-La Sal National Forest would increase from $5.00 to $10.00 per tree beginning this November. Authorized under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act, 95% of the receipts collected from the permits will be retained locally and used to cover some of the expenses of administering the Christmas tree program. The Manti-La Sal National Forest is requesting public comment on this proposed fee increase. Public comments on the proposed fee increase should be submitted by October 24, 2008.
