“Frosty” Alden Dudley Swasey

PRICE-Alden Dudley Swasey age 84 passed away at the home of his son in Price, Utah on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008. He was born on March 19, 1924 in Mona, Utah to Dudley and Jennie Scott Swasey. He married the love of his life, Afton Haws on Nov. 15, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah
Alden worked on the family farm until 1946, he then moved to Dragerton, Utah “East Carbon City” and was employed by US Steel and worked at the Horse Canyon Mine for 39 years. He held various positions there, he was a mechanic, electrician, track foreman, fire boss, section foreman, and day shift general mine foreman. He loved the guys he worked with and would do anything for them.
He was educated in the Mona and Nephi, Utah schools, he was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as second counselor and Bishop of Wellington First Ward, he was a counselor in the High Priests Quorum, a scout leader and went on a full time mission with his beloved wife to Honduras.
After returning home, six months later they went on another full time mission to Mexico, where they both had to learn a new language. Alden served as a temple worker for a year in the Las Vegas temple district. He served a two year custodial mission at Warm Springs recreational area, which he loved very much. He got to swim everyday. He worked for seven years on a pistachio farm for a doctor in Moapa, Nev. He grew two gardens every year while he was there.
He lived by his motto: Early to bed, early to rise. He loved gardening and had a green thumb. It was said, “When Alden starts getting into the garden, it’s time to start planting”. He was a hard working man and did a lion’s share of work. He loved to fish, hunt, and camp with his family.
He followed his sons through little league and pony league baseball and he was a coach and assistant coach for their team. He loved watching the Jazz and St. Louis Cardinals and was an avid fan. He joined coast to coast camp and traveled to different camps with many friends for two years and had a lot of fun.
He loved playing cards and eating ice cream. He liked his goats and goat milk. He liked honest hard working people, and loved to hear little children sing. He would encourage his little grandchildren to sing to him. He liked to tease. There wasn’t too much he disliked. He believed there was good in everyone.
He is survived by his wife, Afton of 65 years; daughter, Darleen (Stan) Larson; son, Steve (Annette) Swasey; daughter, Sandra (Dennis) Behling; son, Roger (Sylvia) Swasey; son, Larry (Colleen) Swasey; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; all four of his sisters; and all four of his brothers; daughter-in-law, Lana Swasey; and grandson Matthew Swasey.
He was the last of his generation. His dad was the baby of a big family and Dad was the baby of his family.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at the Price LDS Third ward chapel (303 West 500 South). A viewing was Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009 at Fausett Mortuary (680 East 100 South – Price, Utah) from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment was in the Wellington City Cemetery.
Services were in the care of Fausett Mortuary.
