The Green River Pirate boy’s and girl’s basketball teams closed out their pre-Christmas schedule with good, quality wins over Meridian High School and Altamont High Scholl in games played at home.
On Wednesday, the Lady Pirates opened the action with a 46-26 victory. Brandi Webster scored 16 points for Green River to pace the team as they handed Meridian their first loss of the young season. Courtney Carter aided in the effort with 11 points. Also scoring were Tracy Engleman with six points, Sarah Swalberg, Bailie Packer and Lindsey Spadafora with three points each and Crosby Hatt and Cady Mecham with two points each.
Green River got out to the early lead and never looked back as they won every quarter on their way to the easy victory. Meridian never scored in double figures in any quarter.
The boy’s team followed up with a 58-35 win as they dominated the game early and kept the pressure on the entire night.
Brennan Bigelow had a big night as he scored 19 points, dished out nine assists and came up with six steals. Tyson Johnson scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the win. Also scoring were Kayden Mecham with 11 points, Jason Johnson with four points, Holden Marshall with five points and Justin Marshall with two points.
On Saturday, Cady Mecham had the biggest game of her young career for the Pirates as she scored 22 points in helping the team grab a 50-42 win over the visiting Altamont team. Green River scored 20 points in the opening quarter while holding their opponent to nine points. Altamont got closer in the second quarter and trailed at the half 28-23. After an even third quarter, Green River closed out the game with 13-10 period to get the win.
Also scoring were Hatt with nine points, Webster and Swalberg with seven points each, Packer with three points and Engleman with two points.
The boys finished the sweep of the week’s games with a 72-56 win. Just like in the girl’s game, the boy’s had a good first quarter and took a big lead, struggled in the second quarter to almost lose the lead and then won the game in the second half.
Kayden Mecham led the team with 22 points, nine rebounds and also had three blocked shots. Senior Tyson Johnson scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds while younger brother Jason scored 14 points and pulled down 15 rebounds.
Brennan Bigelow did not have a bad game as he scored 15 points, as Altamont had no answers for the multi-talented Pirate team. Also scoring were Marshall with seven points and Justin with two points.
The girl’s next game is Jan. 6 at Tabiona while the boy’s next game is at Navajo Mountain with the girls on Jan. 9 as region basketball starts.
