The Lady Pirates visited the Lady Buckaroos on their home court on Thursday night and came away with a win. The Lady Pirates are now 3-0 in league play with Whitehorse at home on Jan. 21.
The girls don’t exactly like the Buckaroo’s floor but look forward to playing a team that has always seemed to bring out the best in their play, this meeting was no different. The two teams started off slow on the offensive end as each team played tough defense. At the end of eight minutes the score favored the Pirates 12 to 9.
While Brandi Webster made the lion’s share of the first quarter points, the second quarter saw five Lady Pirates each score a basket (Sarah Swalberg a three pointer) while Brandi went scoreless.
At the end of three quarters the Pirates amassed an 11 point lead (35-24) but the game was far from over. The Lady Bucks found their stride and a little over mid-way through the fourth they cut the lead to six points. The Green River crowd which was pretty vocal all night seemed to pick it up a notch. There was excitement in the crowd and on the hardwood. The Lady Pirates responded to the pressure by beating the press and for the most part playing patient basketball by trying to eat some time off the clock.
With just under a minute left and the Lady Bucks putting as much pressure on as they could muster late in the game, Crosby Hatt made an impressive steal near the base line and went strong to the hoop-basket and one. Crosby made the free throw and the Pirates were up by 11-game, set and match.
