They were supposed to be easy victories last week for the Emery High Lady Spartans and the games did turn out that way but once again the old adage of “you have got to show up to play” was very evident, at least in the Salem Hills game. Emery defeated Salem Hills 67-32 and North Sanpete 56-39 in region games.
Against Salem Hills, Emery found themselves behind 3-2 with almost three minutes gone in the game and really did not play well until the last couple of minutes of the quarter and then finished with a 12-3 advantage. Jessica Murray scored seven points in the period to help Emery take the lead. Emery did not take advantage of all the opportunities that were there for them.
After extending their lead in the second period, the Spartans devastated the Skyhawks in the second half with a 19-5 third quarter and 16-8 fourth quarter.
Frankie Komar hit two 3-pointers in the second period to lead the team and Jodi Robertson scored eight of her game high 16 points in the third period to pace the team. Brooke Jensen scored six points in the fourth quarter as the reserves played the whole way.
For the game, Robertson led the way with 16 points, four rebounds and five steals. ShiAnne Allred was the leading rebounder with seven and also scored four points. Komar led the team with six assists and also scored six points. Murray scored 10 points in the game and had two steals. Abbie Kay scored nine points and had five rebounds.
Off the bench, Tiffany Tuttle scored six points, Taylor Mann scored four points and had six rebounds, Jensen scored six points, Tayler Jewkes, Makiah Sherman and Courtney Tuttle each scored two points.
After the game Coach Steven Gordon to his players, “Good job tonight, that was a pretty good second half of basketball. You have got to show up to play at the beginning of the game though even if they are not a very good team. That was a good effort.”
Earlier in the week, Emery traveled to Mt. Pleasant and won. Emery grabbed a 15-3 first quarter lead, extended the lead to 31-9 at the half and then coasted into the win.
Robertson had seven points in the first quarter to lead the team with Komar leading the team in the second period with five points. Robertson scored another seven points in the third quarter to pace the team again and then Robertson scored another seven points in the fourth period to again pace the team. Jodi finished the game with 23 points five rebounds, three assists and three steals as she may have played her best all-around game of the season.
ShiAnne Allred, who has been asked to play the perimeter this season and has been taken out of her comfort zone, had a good game with seven points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Frankie finished with 10 points, six assists and also two steals. Abbie Kay had eight points and eight rebounds while Murray had two points and five rebounds. Tiffany Tuttle scored five points and Jewkes scored one point.
Coach Gordon looking forward to this week, “Next week we are on the road for two games. We have got to be mentally tough and ready to play at the beginning of the games. We have Juan Diego and then we go for the rematch at Delta. We have got to get after them.”
Emery is now 4-0 in region play and are looking like the team to beat. Carbon is 3-1 and is looking ahead to the rematch next week.
