Last week was just another typical week for the Emery High Lady Spartan basketball team as they went on the road for two games, scored 55 points in each which is about their season average and won both games. With the wins, Emery stays undefeated in region play and should stay ranked in the top five in 3-A basketball by both Salt Lake City newspapers.
The game in Draper against Juan Diego was anything but a game as the Spartans had their way in about anything they wanted to do from the outset of the game. Juan Diego, at least on this night, was anything but competitive as they only scored 14 points in the entire ball game. Fourteen points in the entire game with only two of those points coming in the second half of play.
After leading 28-12 at halftime, Emery’s defense limited the Soaring Eagles to one point in each of the last two quarters of the game. It seems the Eagles were grounded this night.
Emery took a 17-5 first quarter lead behind Frankie Komar’s eight points including a pair of 3-pointers. Jodi Robertson, after having scored four points in the first quarter added another four points in the second quarter to pace the Spartans. Emery then won the third period 16-1 and the fourth quarter 11-1 as a lot of players saw action.
For the game, Komar led the team with 15 points and with four assists. Robertson had 11 points and four rebounds. ShiAnne Allred scored five points, led the team with eight rebounds and had three steals. Abbie Kay scored seven points, pulled down six rebounds and also had three steals. Jessica Murray scored eight points, Tiffany Tuttle scored seven points and Brooke Jensen scored two points.
On Thursday, Emery escaped with a win against Delta. While no one can exactly explain why Delta is a such a tough place to play, Emery almost always struggles there and this game was no different.
Delta took command of the game almost from the opening tip-off and over the first four minutes hit five 3-pointers in a row with one guard hitting four of those. The only question to be asked is why was she still open and that will have to go unanswered. She was shut down defensively from this point forward.
Emery trailed 17-13 after the first quarter and 30-27 at the half. The biggest lead that Delta could muster was 7 points. At this point, it could be said and in fact Head Coach Steven Gordon did say, “Delta is playing out of their heads and we seem slow. We are playing just as we warmed up, lazy.” Despite the efforts by each of the teams, Emery was still one basket away from leading the contest.
With Abbie Kay scoring six points, Emery took control in the third quarter and built a 10-point lead as they outscored the Rabbits 16-3 in the period. Robertson added another five points and played good defense against Delta’s best offensive threat.
In the fourth quarter, Emery had an 11-point lead and the ball. Robertson seemed to be knocked to the floor and the ball stolen from her. I say seemed to be as no foul was called. Emery stole the ball back from Delta but was called for a foul sending a Rabbit to the line. An Emery captain asked a question of the official, was given a technical for talking and just like that Delta had themselves four free throws, which they made, and the ball back and a made 3-pointer and Emery now had a four point lead.
Emery went six for six at the free throw line in the final period with Allred hitting two in the closing minute to clinch the win.
Four Spartans finished the game in double figures led by Abbie with 16 points. Abbie was four for four at the line and scored six baskets. Abbie also had five steals in the game. Frankie scored 12 points, including a pair of 3’s, had five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
ShiAnne scored 10 points and added six rebounds while Jodi also scored 10 points and had three steals. Jessica scored six points and had six steals.
Emery will travel to Carbon Tuesday night and will host North Sanpete Thursday night.
