Emery County Recreation To Host First Annual Dodgeball Tournament
The tournament will be held March 21 at 9 a.m. at the Emery County Rec. Building, 75 Sout 400 East Castle Dale.Get your teams together and lets see who will be crowned Emery County Champions. Register at the Emery County Rec Building before March 13. Teams must have six (or more) persons and can be made up of school business or family teams. Teams will be bracketed based on levels of players. The entry fee is $5 per person.
Emery County Relay for Life Kickoff
The kickoff for the Emery County Relay for Life will be held on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Senior Citizens Bldg at 176 West 100 North in Huntington. Team sign-ups will take place, along with other areas of interest pertaining to the relay. Come join us for an evening as we look toward the relay. Team sign-up between now and March 15th will be $50, after that it will be $100. Get a jump start with your team. See you there.
Ferron Library Free Fine Friday
Ferron Library is once again having February free fine Feb. 20. Come in or call the library. Patrons are eligible if their fines are less than $5 and haven’t been called or sent a notice.

Volunteers of America and RSVP to Walk To Russia
Volunteers of American, Retired Senior Volunteers and the Foster Grandparent Volunteers are sponsoring another walk for seniors in our county. The kick-off party for West Emery County will be March 17-18 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the RSVP office in Castle Dale. For Green River, the kick-off party will be March 24 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1:30-3 p.m. at the Community Center in the Senior Center. If you don’t have a pedometer, they will be available at the kick-off parties. It is 5,548 miles to Moscow. National Day of the American Cowboy
Utah Cowboys representing all 29 counties in the State will be honored on July 2 during the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo. Anyone is welcome to nominate a deserving cowboy or cowgirl from within the county in which they reside to receive this honor. Cowboy or cowgirl nominee must be a current resident of the county for which the nomination is submitted. The nominee shall have made an outstanding contribution to the western heritage lifestyle and to the preservation of Utah’s western and cowboy culture for future generations. Nominee should personify courage, hard work honesty, integrity, and patriotism. Nominee’ may include working cowboy, rodeo cowboy, rancher, cattleman, cowboy entertainer, cowboy artist, cowboy musician, cowboy author, and others who have contributed to Utah’s Cowboy and Western culture. Utah Trail Machine Association Annual Clean-up Day At Five Mile Pass
This years event, dubbed “High Five” will be held May 23 (Memorial Day weekend). This event is a demonstration of the UTMA’s committment to good citizenship and responsible behavior. In addition to clean-up work we will be promoting safety and family-oriented recreational OHV activities. The trail rides at the end of the day will be educational as well as fun. They are inviting 70+ OHV clubs and associations in Utah to join us and we’re presenting this event in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Managment and the Utah Department of Natural Resources.

Looking for Injured Veterans
A New Orleans doctor is looking for veterans of either the Iraq war or the war in Afghanistan who have suffered traumatic brain injury or post traumatic stress disorder to participate in a free pilot trial of treatment that so far has had 100 percent beneficial results. Veterans who qualify will be flown to the clinic (and home later) free, and sponsors are making lodging, meals and transportation available at vastly reduced rates. The Emery County Community Theatre will present Nunsense, a hilarious comedy about a convent full of nuns on March 12-14. Watch for times and place.
Learn To Be Self Sufficient
A class which teaches self sufficiency and using home food storage is being taught at the Courthouse in Castle Dale on March 6 at noon. Everyone is welcome to attend and is asked to bring a pot luck dish.
Utah Young Humanitarian Award Program
The purpose of this award is to recognize youth who excel at giving back to their communities and to inspire more youth to service. This award program which is in its fifth year, offers a $5,000 college scholarship and is open to all secondary and undergraduate college students in Utah, who are American citizens. Funding for the program is provided by Chase bank and Xmission internet services. Application packets have been mailed to scholarship counselors and service club leaders throughout the State. Utah State Courts Plan Judge For A Day Program Celebrating Lincoln’s Bicentennial
Students who believe TV dramas such as “Law and Order,” are an accurate depiction of how the courts operate can judge for themselves as part of the fourth annual Judge for a Day program offered by the Utah State Courts. The state court is asking Utah high schools to select a student to participate in the program based on an essay, civic involvement resume, or teacher nomination. Student essays should be written about the “A Legacy of Liberty: Celebrating Lincoln’s Bicentennial,” which is the 2009 Law Day theme. The Law Day theme is selected by the American Bar Association and will explore the role of law in fulfilling the promises of the Declaration of Independence. On May 1, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law Day as a day of national dedication to the principle of government under law. Each student will shadow a judge in one of the state’s eight judicial districts in either April or May. The student will spend the day learning what it takes to become a judge, the duties a judge performs, and about the judicial branch of government. Schools are asked to submit an application form by March 6 to the Utah State Court’s public information officer, Nancy Volmer, at nancyv@email.utcourts.gov. Special Needs Swim Program
Registration will be held Feb. 24 at the Emery County Recreation Office for the children with special needs swim program. The program will run March 2-6 from 4-5 p.m. each day. This program is for children who are not able to participate in other county programs who are physically or mentally challenged. Your child must qualify to participate in this program.
