With two more basketball victories last week, the Emery High Lady Spartans finished the region season perfectly with a 10-0 record and will now host Uintah High School this Saturday night in the Spartan Center as they begin their quest for another state title. Emery defeated Salem Hills in the road 65-34 and then finished the season off with Juan Diego at home and another win at 59-31.
Along with Wasatch, Judge, Carbon, Grantsville and Morgan, Emery has a legitimate shot at winning it all this season. While the road is not easy, it is the same for all the teams as none have a superior claim on the others. The three seniors on this team have been part of the program for four years and are veterans in the state battles. Frankie Komar, Jodi Robertson and ShiAnne Allred are three-year starters that shine on both ends of the court.
At Salem Hills, Emery jumped on top at the beginning and played their game throughout and won easily. Abbie Kay, a junior post player that has matured as the season has progressed, led the team in scoring with 10 points in the first period. Abbie was fed time and again with great passes and she finished off the play by hitting the short shot. Emery led 16-3 after the first quarter.
Jodi led the team in the second quarter with nine points as she hit two outside shots and had a drive to the basket. Emery led at the half 31-11.
Abbie went off again in the third quarter with nine points and Emery led 53-25. The second team played most of the fourth quarter and sophomore Tayler Jewkes led the team with five points.
Abbie had 21 points, four rebounds and two steals. Jodi had 13 points and four steals. Frankie finished with seven points, four rebounds, five assists and five steals. ShiAnne finished with four points and six rebounds and Jessica Murray had three points, five rebounds and two steals as the starters all had good games.
Off the bench, Tiffany Tuttle scored six points and had four rebounds while Markette Tanner had four points and five rebounds. Taylor Mann had two points and two rebounds and Tayler Jewkes had five points.
Against Juan Diego, Abbie again led the team in scoring, this time with 20 points. Emery took a 19-11 first period lead and then constantly increased the lead throughout. Jodi added 12 points; ShiAnne added eight points, Frankie had six points and Jessica had five points. Off the bench, Tayler Jewkes had three points and Tuttle had one point.
Head coach talked about the week, “We executed really well at Salem Hills as we finally played Emery ball, we played up to our capacity and played a complete game.”
Coach Gordon then talked about the upcoming playoffs, “We will play Uintah High, a team that is currently 4-14. This is a game that we should win but this team will not lie down for us, they will come here ready to play, looking for an upset.
“We would face Bear River or Morgan in the second round if we advance. Either team would be a difficult opponent. They are both good teams that are currently tied in region 11 play,” said Coach Gordon.
Emery will host Uintah on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
