"Derryl Perry is coming to Ferron. "

By By

On May 30 there will be a Derryl Perry concert and benefit at the Ferron Fairgrounds. Perry is a country rock artist, originally from Texas and has played out of Nashville, Tenn. for the past eight years. He has performed more than 1,100 shows throughout the country and opened for big ticket bands like Diamond Rio, Tracy Byrd, Joe Diffie, Chris Ledoux, Andy Griggs, Asleep at the Wheel and Gary Allen. Check out Derryl’s web site, derrylperry.com. The concert has now become a non-profit benefit for Dustin Hannabach, who is an Emery Town descendant of Zona Anderson; a true Emery County pioneer. Dustin contracted a rare form of bone cancer, osteosarcoma, in the hip and femur. He is in chemotherapy 24-7 and won’t be operated on until the first part of May. Because this concert and benefit became so popular, the sponsors decided to hold the concert at the Fairgrounds in Ferron. This will be a re-enactment of the Ferron Fandango from the early 1970s. From now on it will be called the ‘Fairin’ Fandango’.
Many musicians would show up for these jams. The first year it was a fund raiser for a local merchant and in recent years became a small gathering during the Cinco De Mayo (May 5) Mexican holiday. Friends, family and musicians would meet from all across the nation, at the American Legion Club, in Emery Town. The group would agree to a camping area in the San Rafael Desert and move the jam to there. For days the group would enjoy the area and play every imaginable instrument and old songs. (Some they made up too.) This gathering continued for 34 years.
Along with Derryl Perry’s concert at 7 p.m. that evening there will be live open mike sessions all day long featuring ‘Fingers the Fiddler’ (Jim Schupe). Jim’s dad started the Old Time Fiddlers Association in Utah and played with the Utah Symphony.
Fingers was a three time fiddlers champion in Utah and became the national fiddlers champion in 1989. Fingers can be seen performing his magic on you tube. In the search box type in kapbrothersband. You should see several videos. The best is fiddlin’ frenzy featuring Fingers.
There will be ticket discounts of $5 available through raffle ticket sales of $10 or more and area merchant purchases of $50 or more. The full purchase price for the tickets will be $18 for the fair, activities and the concert.
Many crafters and vendors have already expressed interest and agreed to come. Anyone wishing to participate as a vendor or crafter will receive one ticket for their space and can call Mark at (760-415-0285) for details. Raffle tickets and concert tickets will be on sale soon at Desertview Federal Credit Union and several local merchants. Listen for up-dates on Kickin’ Country and check the Emery County Progress. Spread the word, Dustin needs your help.
A non-profit account is set-up at Desertview Federal Credit Union which is accepting donations in the name of Dustin Hannabach. Hope to see you all at the fair.
