1918-2009
PRICE-Gus Burdis, age 90, our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, cousin, brother, and friend to everyone passed away March 25, 2009 at home of heart failure. He was cared for by his family during the illness.
He was born on April 7, 1918 in Reliance, Wyo. to Stavros Bourdadonakis and Maria Polyhronakis, Greek immigrants from the island of Crete.
He graduated in 1938 from Carbon High School in Price, Utah and was in the first graduating class of Carbon College in 1940.
On a trip to Ferron he found a “peach”, Dorothy Pettey and they were married on March 6, 1941.
He served in the Air Corps, US Army during WW II in the Pacific Theater where he was involved in air cargo supply missions where he earned several medals for outstanding service including the Air Medal. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Miner’s Post #2379.
Following his discharge he returned to Price and was co-owner of the Star bowling alley. They later moved to Dragerton, where he owned and operated the Sunny Bowl with the invaluable help of his wife and family for 21 years. He next managed the Price Elks Lodge for 12 years. He and his wife moved to Burlington, Iowa to manage the Burlington Golf and Country Club for 14 years and also the Ogden Country Club for one year. He retired and moved back to Price to be close to family and friends. Friends who knew him called him a Carbon County pioneer. All who knew him experienced his sense of humor and his generosity. He will be missed by all.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy, and his four children, Rosemary (Ray), Annette (Don), Frank (Liz) and Paul (Connie); brother Sam; cousin Sophie (Gene); grandchildren Karl, Shaundra, Shane, Todd, Dustin, PJ, Jennifer, Nora, and Andy; great-grandchildren Ashley, Kelsey, Jason, Keira, Nicholas, Alex, Gracie, Mikah, Bridger, and Jacelyn.
Gus was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Paul, Frank and George Burdis; and granddaughter Brooke Rae Burdis.
The family would like to thank Dr. Glenn Etzel, Castleview Hospital, Doug Parsons and the ICU, Price Community Nursing Services and Hospice, Robert and Bobby Etzel of Mitchell’s Mortuary for their help and compassionate service. Funeral service was held Saturday, March 28, 2009, 11 a.m., Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Price. Trisagion service, Friday evening 7 p.m. Mitchell Funeral Home. Family was at Mitchell’s Friday and Saturday one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
