After the Emery Spartans had defeated the Juan Diego Soaring Eagles in Draper several weeks ago, the Eagles were knocked from the number one ranking in both Salt Lake newspapers and the Eagles were eagerly awaiting the return engagement to return the favor with a home loss for Emery. The trash talk in the newspaper blogs was actually kind of fun to read if one didn’t take it too seriously. Last Friday, the second game took place at Emery High and Juan Diego took advantage of five Emery errors to easily defeat the Spartans. Final score in the game was 10-0.
Head coach Steven Gordon talked about the loss, “With the region championship potentially on the line, I thought our guys would be ready but with all the mistakes we made, we never really were even in the game.”
Juan Diego pitched one of their aces in the game and Olsen never let Emery come close to rallying. Emery had only four batters get on base in the game and two of them got picked off base. Gatlan Huntington led off the game with a walk and then singled in the third inning for two of the Emery base runners. Colby Snow doubled in the second inning and Brett Mecham singled in the fifth inning for the extent of the Spartan offense in this game.
Juan Diego opened the game with four runs in the first inning off Spartan starter Gatlan Huntington. Two walks, two doubles and a single caused the damage and Emery never recovered. Juan Diego scored single runs in the second, third and sixth innings and three more runs in the fifth inning. All of those runs were unearned due to the Emery errors.
Emery still maintains a half game lead in the region standings over Juan Diego with the region season winding down because of weathered out games around the state this season. Emery is 5-1 and the Eagles are 4-1. Emery is still trying to make up an earlier snowed out game with Delta that has now been delayed twice. Juan Diego has two games they are trying to reschedule.
Emery defeated North Sanpete last week in Mt. Pleasant 21-7 in their other scheduled region game. After a fairly close three innings of play, Emery sent 17 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, garnered six base hits including a grand slam homerun by Derrick Allred, two walks, six Hawk errors and 12 runs.
Allred led the team with three hits in four at bats, had a triple besides the homerun, scored once and had five RBIs. Snow scored four times, had two hits, one a homer, and three RBIs. Addison Collard scored three times, had two hits including a double and had three RBIs. Tayler Tanner and Nevin Jensen each scored three times in the game and each had two base hits. Jason Giles had three base hits, one a double, and scored three times in the game. Kashe Jewkes scored once and had two base hits while Brett Mecham scored twice and had one base hit.
Besides the big fourth inning, Emery scored one run in the first inning, another run in the second inning, three more runs in the third inning and four more runs in the fifth inning. When Emery went to bat in the top of the fourth inning, North Sanpete led the game 6-5.
Emery picked up 17 base hits in the game while pitcher Brett Mecham allowed just seven base hits. Six of those hits were for extra bases for North Sanpete. Emery committed two errors while the Hawks committed eight errors.
Emery will play Delta this Tuesday in Castle Dale with the Spartans still looking to make up a game with the Rabbits and then will travel to Salem Hills this Friday.
They will play the Rabbits in Delta on May 1.
