On May 15-16, the Green River Pirate track team consisting of Megan Hatt, Sarah Swalberg and Lindsey Spadafora attended the State track meet where two of the three competed and came away with a first place, third place, fifth place and seventh place finish. Lindsey Spadafora, nursing a nagging injury wasn’t able to compete in the long jump but her team mate Megan Hatt competed and took fifth place with a jump of 15′ 6″. Megan competed in the 100 M dash and placed seventh in the finals with a time of 14:27; not her best time as she ran a 13:79 in the first heat of the preliminaries, but Megan is a Freshman with the talent and desire to compete; plus three more years.
Sarah Swalberg set foot on the infield and came away with a third place finish in the shot put with a throw of 32′ even and bested her personal record by 5″. Swalberg took a first place finish in the javelin with a throw of 125′ 5″ besting her personal record, also by 5″. Of interesting note, the girl who took first in the shot put, Kandice Gleave from Piute, took third in the javelin. Sarah took first in the javelin and third in the shot put.
The Pirate team struggled throughout the season to maintain consistent numbers of student athletes but the core group continued on through adversity, early morning practices and in the words of some of the girls, bone chilling track meets. Each was excited to attend State and compete against schools in their classification. It was a huge disappointment for Lindsey after a season of consistent numbers to not be able to compete at the state level but she was a true competitor and team mate and fought to the end.
Megan and Sarah have a few years left to hone their skills and improve on their finishes or distances in search of taking first or besting the marks set by past athletes.
