"Markette Tanner sets the ball for Emery."

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

The Emery High Lady Spartans opened the 2009 season at a tournament at the Dixie Center put on by Dixie High School. Although Emery finished with a 2-4 record, Coach Kris Bell was generally happy with her team and thought that the girls really played pretty good.
Kris said, “As a group, the girls played well. We need consistency for an entire game but we had moments that we really played well.”
With last season’s team being a senior dominated team, Coach Bell and the team went into this tournament thinking that this was a good place for the girls to earn their way into the starting line-up. Bell came home knowing that the starting line-up for the next game is still not set because of good play by many girls.
Emery played Parowan first on Friday and won 25-18 and 25-13. Emery looked good in easily winning this match. Emery then played Pine View and lost in three games. The scores were 25-22, 21-25 and 14-16. Emery had their opportunities against this 4-A school.
Emery then lost 23-25 and 23-25 to South Sevier. Again the opportunities were there. Emery then defeated Grantsville in three games. The scores were 25-16, 22-25 and 15-1. Emery played well in the two games they won and decently in the third game.
Emery finished the tournament with games against a pair of 5-A teams. Emery lost to Roy 18-25 and 22-25. Emery then closed out the tournament with a loss against Spanish Fork. Emery lost 12-25 and 16-25. This was the only match that Emery did not look good in.
Emery travels to Park City this Thursday for a non-region match.
