Was it the fact that the Green River Lady Pirates volleyball team was there to cheer them on or was it the fact that they began Region 18 play? Maybe it was the fact that the team came together and played to their potential and brought home a win.
The Pirates played two games on the home field of the Tintic Miners who since the last time the Pirates played on their field have added red clay to the infield and grass to the outfield.
The day was perfect and the Pirate bats were humming and the defense made some early plays that brought needed confidence to a bruised team. Adrian Escalante pounded his first home run of the season into right center while Jason Johnson put one over the left field fence for his fourth. Elias Polito was on the mound and he brought with him ‘game face’. Elias, who had struggled earlier with consistency found his mark and the Miners paid the price. Elias pitched four complete innings with Adrian Escalante finishing the last two innings. ‘E’ said after the game that he was more focused, having the ability to more fully tune out game noises and concentrate on the task at hand.
The second game wasn’t as nice as the first. You see, the Tintic Miners have this pitcher who according to a few Pirate players said he scares them while at the plate. He’s fast and he’s accurate with a slider and curve ball. This didn’t mean that the Pirates couldn’t hit off him but it made it very difficult. The first game saw a score of 15 to 13 in the Pirates favor; the second game was 10 to nothing and was called with the mercy rule.
