Lady Spartans win two, close call in Delta

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports writer

For a team that averages nearly 60 point per game, winning at Delta by a score of 38-32 can probably be best described as survival. Emery earlier in the week defeated an outmanned American Leadership Academy team 60-28 for an easy non-region win.
At Delta, many things were not ideal for Emery. Emery’s three starters not named Mann or Kay connected for only one basket in the game as they were one for 12 in shooting. Not many fouls were called in the game, in fact only 11 on each team. Emery’s inside game was affected by the non-calls. Out of Emery’s 11 fouls, Abbie Kay had five while the rest of the team had six. Finally, playing at Delta is never easy for anybody.
Emery trailed at the end of the first period 10-8 despite the hot shooting by Kay. Abbie was three for three from the field and scored six of the eight points. Emery took the lead in the second quarter and won the period 10-6 and led at the half 18-16. Brooke Jensen came off the bench and led Emery with eight points in the second period. Brooke replaced Kay who was in foul trouble.
Emery won the third quarter 10-8 to build their lead to four points. Taylor Mann led the team with eight points in the period. In the fourth quarter, Emery again won the period 10-8 and the ball game. Abbie and Taylor each had four points in the period.
Emery finished the game by making four of eight free throws. Delta was worse at the line as they only made four of 15.
Taylor led the team in scoring with 14 points while Abbie scored 12 points and Brooke scored 10 points. Jessica Murray was the only other Spartan to score and she had a basket in the second quarter to finish with two points.
Taylor also had 10 rebounds in the game plus six blocked shots and dished out four assists. She also had a steal. Abbie had nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Jessica led the team with three steals while Tayler Jewkes dished out three assists.
Against ALA, Emery was at their normal self and easily handled the Utah County school. Emery led 11-5 after the first period, 22-9 at the half, 46-18 after three periods and won by 32 points.
Taylor Mann led the team again, this time with 20 points. Abbie Kay and Tayler Jewkes also finished in double figures with 11 points each.
Also scoring for Emery in the game were Markette Tanner with six points, Blayr Jeffs with five points, Jenni Stinson with four points, Brooke Jensen with three points and Jeridi Price with two points.
Emery will host Manti tonight at the Spartan Center and will travel to North Sanpete this Thursday night for a rematch of the first region game.
