OREM/SPRING GLEN- Robert Nichols loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather passed away Feb.11, 2010 at the age of 77 after a long courageous battle with myelodysplastic syndrome.
He was an example of love courage, ethics, honesty and loyalty to all who knew him. He was born in Helper, Utah June 11, 1932 to Harry and Virginia (Johnson) Nichols. He attended school in Castle Gate, Spring Glen and graduated from Carbon High School in 1950. He served two years in the Korean Conflict and received the Purple Heart medal as well as an achievement award.
On his return home, he married Betty Ori, his high school sweetheart on Aug. 28, 1954 at St. Anthony Parish in Helper, Utah. They lived in Spring Glen, Utah for five years where they started their family. They later moved to Murray, Utah where he started working in the grocery business (Albertson’s) as a meat department manager. They moved to Orem, Utah and after five years were transferred to Anaheim, Calif. The family enjoyed three years there but wanted to move back to Utah. They remained in Orem where he worked for Macey’s in Spanish Fork until he retired in 1994.
He took pride in everything he did and always gave of himself to friends, neighbors and families in need. He was a lifetime member of the B.P.O. Elks lodge #840 Provo, Utah prior to that he was a member of the Price Lodge Elks and Solvenian Lodge Spring Glen, Utah. He loved and respected his family and siblings keeping close ties to them. He enjoyed their trips and times they spent together. For their 50th wedding anniversary, their children and grandchildren took them to Washington DC to see the sites and visit the war memorials. It was one of the highlights of his life. His kindness and generosity will not be forgotten.
He is survived by his wife, son Robert E. (Nancy) Nichols Orem, Utah; daughter Lori (Kim) Eckles Sandy, Utah; grandchildren Cammie (Ed) Cable, Bluffdale, Utah, Chad Eckles Washington DC and Alexandrea Nichols Orem, Utah; great-grandchildren Ariana and Dominic Cable Bluffdale, Utah; brothers Mel Corky Nichols Price, Utah, Bill (Sandy) Nichols Carbonville, Utah and Fred Nichols Price, Utah; sister Connie (Paul) Cutler, Stanton, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother (Gary Nichols).
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, 11 a.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 Main Street in Price, Utah. Family will be at Mitchell’s Monday evening from 6-7 p.m. and Tuesday one hour prior to service. Interment, Mt. View Cemetery, Helper Utah.
