The Emery High Lady Spartans finished their region 12 season last week with two relatively easy victories over Manti and Delta to claim the region title for 2010 and finish the region season at 9-1. Emery defeated Manti on Tuesday 73-37 and Delta on Thursday 65-43.
The Delta game had made the Emery coaching staff just a little nervous for several reasons. It was just a couple of weeks ago that Delta knocked off Richfield which surprised everybody and Emery did not want a repeat of that to happen to them. Emery had played a very close game at Delta several weeks ago and Delta has been playing well ever since.
After the Delta game Coach Steven Gordon was pleased with his team, “We played pretty good, the girls jumped out early on Delta and never let up. We played pretty well; we shot well all night long. I’m happy for the girls.”
Emery shot the ball really well against the Rabbits. Markette Tanner led the way with 100 percent shooting for the night. Tanner was three for three from behind the 3-point line and one for one in front of it. Taylor Mann went nine for 10 from the field and Abbie Kay went six for nine in the game.
Emery jumped out to a 12-point first quarter lead at 22-10 and then extended it to 17 points by the half as Emery led 40-23. Emery built the lead to 26 points by the end of the third quarter as the younger players then finished off the 22-point victory in the fourth quarter.
Taylor Mann led the team with 21 points in the game. Mann also pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked six shots. Abbie Kay was right behind with 13 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots. Tanner was the only other Spartan in double figures and she finished with 11 points.
Also scoring in the game were Jenni Stinson with eight points, Jessica Murray with five points, Tayler Jewkes with three points, Jeridi Price with two points and Blayr Jeffs and Makia Sherman each with one point.
Emery had defeated Manti earlier in the week with a blowout win on the road. Emery led by 10 after the first period 21-11, led by 20 at the half at 45-25, led by 23 after a slow third period at 52-29 and then Emery took the final period 21-8 to win by 36 points.
Abbie led the team in scoring in this game with 14 points as 10 different Spartans scored. Abbie also had four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Taylor scored nine points, pulled down six rebounds, had three assists and two blocked shots besides having a steal. Also finishing in double figures in scoring were Tayler Jewkes with 11 points and Jeridi Price with 11 points. Jewkes also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal while Price went five for seven from the field.
Brooke Jensen scored eight points, Jessica Murray and Kim Oldroyd each scored six points, Jenni Stinson scored four points and Makia Sherman and Blayr Jeffs each scored two points.
Emery finished the region with a 9-1 record and has a 19-1 record for the season. Richfield is a game behind at 8-2 and 17-3 overall. Delta is 7-3 followed by Juab at 4-6, North Sanpete at 2-8 and Manti at 0-10. In the state, Morgan is 20-1, Union is 18-1 and Judge Memorial is 18-3.
Emery scored 634 points in their region this season with Judge scoring the second most points at 572. Emery has scored 1,204 points throughout the season while Morgan is second with 1184 points.
Emery plays Wasatch High Tuesday night in a non-region game that will serve as a warm-up for state play and then will host a first round game this Friday night at 7 p.m. against the number four team out of the northern region.
