This season’s Emery High baseball team tried to open the season at Gunnison on Tuesday but they were snowed out. They then traveled to Moab last weekend and opened the 2010 season with four impressive wins. On Friday, Emery defeated Grand 10-0 as senior Colter Moore pitched a no-hitter. Later in the day, Emery defeated Pagosa Springs 16-0 as Bradon Bolotas pitched another no-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts. On Saturday, Emery defeated Grand for the second time by a score of 12-1. Geren Payne pitched the game and struck out nine batters. In the JV game on Saturday, Emery again defeated Pagosa Springs.
In the opening game, Emery scored in every inning that was played in the shortened game. Emery had 12 hits in the game and four Spartans had two hits each. Gage Bell, Nathan Mecham, Nick Stoddard and Quinn Montgomery all had two hits. Bell, Nevin Jensen, Moore and Kash Jewkes all scored twice in the game. Jensen and Jewkes both hit a triple in the game and Stoddard had a double.
Against Pagosa Springs, Emery scored in four of the five innings. Emery scored six runs in the second inning and five runs in the fifth inning. Stoddard led the way with four base hits including two doubles and a triple. Bolotas had three hits in the game with one being a triple. Both Bolotas and Stoddard scored three times in the game as did Mecham. Moore, Payne and Montgomery each had two hits in the ball game.
On Saturday, Montgomery led the way with three base hits as Emery played Grand again Emery scored in three of the four innings and scored nine runs in the third inning as 13 batters stepped in against Grand pitching. Bell and Mecham each had two hits. Stoddard with a triple and Jewkes with a double were the only extra base hits in this game. Montgomery, Jewkes, Bolotas and Bell all scored two runs.
In the three games, Emery scored 38 runs and had 38 base hits. Emery also received 16 walks and three batters got hit by pitches. Emery pitching gave up one base hit in the three games plus two base on balls, one hit batter and one Emery error allowed a batter to reach base.
Emery hosts Cedar on Tuesday, travels to Carbon on Wednesday and then will play three games in Montrose, Colo. on the weekend.
