CARBONVILLE-Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend Mary Merena Perla, age 90 passed away March 23, 2010 due to complications from pneumonia.
Merena was born Jan. 23, 1920 in Price, Utah to Pete and Maria Bellucci Bladig.
She married Frank J. Perla, May 9, 1957. He died June 18, 2001. They had two children, Frank and Lisa.
She was a member of Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church.
Merena received her RN degree from Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1943. She then went to work at St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ogden, Utah from 1943-1965 when she moved back to Price to care for her aging mother. Merena was the ER supervisor and house supervisor at the Carbon Hospital and later at Castleview Hospital until she retired in 1985. Merena was the first recipient of the Dr. Frist Humanitarian Award that was given in this area.
Merena spent her time caring for family, friends and neighbors after her retirement. Merena had a great sense of humor and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Survived by her son, Frank (Carol) Perla, Carbonville; daughter, Lisa (Larry S.) Martinez, Carbonville; brother, Remo Spigarelli, Boston; grandchildren, Michael (Becky) Whitlock, Oregon; Elizabeth Whitlock, New York; great-granddaughter, Gillian Castleberry, Oregon; sisters-in-law, Rose Koran and Annie Peczuh, Carbonville; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Cecil Spigarelli, and sisters Ellen Bladig, Irene Percich, and Perena Marzo.
Funeral Mass was Saturday, March 27, 2010, 1 p.m., Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church. Vigil service, Friday evening 7 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family was at Mitchell’s Friday and Saturday one hour prior to services. Committal Service Price City Cemetery. Services entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home.
