Last Friday, the Emery High Lady Spartan softball team traveled to Delta and came home with an 8-7 victory over the host Rabbits. Emery found themselves behind early in the game as the Rabbits scored three runs in the first inning and another two runs in the second inning and Delta led 5-0 after the second inning.Emery, in those first two innings, had managed only a single base hit, a double by Gabby Guymon. Guymon leads 3-A in doubles this season. Emery managed to score their first run in the top of the fourth inning. Markette Tanner singled, Guymon singled and Tanner scored to give the Spartans their first run of the game. Delta responded with a homerun in the bottom of the inning and the Rabbits led 6-1.
After no one scored in the fifth inning, Emery came to bat in the top of the sixth inning down by five runs. Tanner got on base due to catcher interference as she led off the inning. Guymon then got on base due to an error by the Rabbit second baseman. With two on and none out, Mackenzie Grange was the first Spartan out on a fly ball caught by the Delta shortstop.
Michelle Oliver then walked to load the bases followed by a walk to Shelby Mason. Both walks came on full counts. With one run in and the bases still loaded, Danavin Reed singled to centerfield to score another run. Whitney Roper, then ground out to the third baseman but another run scored. Abbie Kay then doubled to right field to score another run and Emery trailed 6-5.
Delta scored an insurance run in the bottom of the inning to lead going into the last inning 7-5. Tanner, for the third time in the game, batted leadoff and got on base. This time Markette walked.
Guymon followed up by getting on base due to another error by the Rabbit second baseman. Grange then singled to center and now Emery had the bases loaded.
Oliver singled to center and scored Tanner and Emery still had the bases loaded. JoLynn Jennings went in to pinch run for Grange at second base. With Emery still down 7-6, Mason struck out and then Reed hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Guymon and Jennings advanced to third base.
Jennings would then score the winning run on a passed ball. Emery then sent Delta down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to claim the win.
Emery travels to Richfield Tuesday and then plays a non-region game against Carbon on Tuesday before state play begins on Saturday. It appears Emery will be heading north to Bear River to play.
