HUNTINGTON-Gertrude “Gertie” Elizabeth Peterson Fish, age 90, passed away May 1, 2010. Gertie was born in Frederik, S.D. on July 3, 1919, to Edward Clarence and Elizabeth Amanda Amelia Kutschi Peterson.
She graduated high school and went on to college where she received her teaching degree. She taught elementary school for two years during World War II. Later she moved to Menlo Park, Calif., where she worked for the defense plant where she built electronic vacuum tubes.
This is where she met her husband, Grant Fish, of 64 years. After being married on April 23, 1946, they moved to Huntington, Utah, and shortly thereafter settled in Wattis, Utah, where Gertie was an elementary school teacher for two years. They resided in Wattis for the next 12 years (1948-1961).
In 1961, they moved to Layton, Utah and resided there for many years. In 1981, they moved back to Huntington to make their home and be close to family.
Gertie loved to dance. Every Saturday they would go to many different establishments-such as Canyon Club, Polka Place, and Moose Club-to enjoy her love of dance.
She also enjoyed camping, fishing, and being outdoors. Gertie was a wonderful homemaker. She always had an impeccable home, garden, and yard. She enjoyed sitting outside frequently to enjoy her flowers and garden. Gertie was an excellent baker, and many nieces and nephews looked forward to the holiday season just to get some of Aunt Gertie’s cookies. She was also a great cook of Polish foods. Everyone enjoyed her variety of Polish cooking.
Gertie was an avid jig-saw puzzle lover, and she enjoyed doing many other varieties of crafts. She was an avid reader-there are stories of Gertie’s mother searching for her only to find her in the attic reading. She also enjoyed traveling back East to visit family. Gertie loved children very much, this is one reason she chose to be a school teacher. Although she never had children of her own, she was always involved with all the children in the family.
Gertie is survived by her husband, Grant; two brothers, Robert Peterson and Dean (Siri) Peterson; three brothers-in-law: Clarence Quatier, Larry (Delena) Fish, and Hugh (Leora) Fish; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Fish; and countless nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Ruth Quatier; four brothers: Glen, Lynn, Dale, and Harold Peterson; a sister-in-law, Jean Fish; her in-laws, Max and Zina Fish; and a brother-in-law, Bryce Fish.
