The Green River Pirates track team has enjoyed a success at each track meet they participate in. A scaled back team participated in the Milford track meet on April 10 and five of the six athletes made it into the finals in at least one of their events and all the participating athletes set new personal records in each of their events. “That’s what track is all about, doing your best as an athlete and letting the chips fall where they will,” said coach Royd Hatt in reflecting on the season so far. At Milford the Pirates were competing against 1A teams and they performed very well.
On April 17, the Pirate Track team visited the Carbon High invitational and again each athlete performed well, but this time they were competing against larger 3A and 4A teams. Sarah Swalberg took first in the javelin with a distance of 123′ 2″ and fifth in the shot put with a distance of 30′ 3.5″ while Megan Hatt took third in the long jump with a distance of 15′ 2.75″. Justin Johnson took third in the javelin with a distance of 141′ 11″ while Jason Johnson took sixth in the shot put with a distance of 36′ 3.75″. Dallice Johnson set her personal record with a jump of 13′ 2.25″ along with Melissa Antillion with a jump of 13′ .75″. Kieth Clark set his personal best with a discus throw of 89′ 11.5″.
The Pirates held their heads high as they competed on the track with the larger schools. In the 100 M hurdles, Megan Hatt posted a 18.70 time in her first running in this event. Kelsee Robertson posted a sub 32 second time in the 200 M run with a time of 31.96, her personal best while Michella Hughes posted a 29.91 and Megan Hatt a 29.41.
Jason Johnson posted a 25.47 in his running of the 200 M while Michaella Hughes gutted out a 14.59 in the 100 M and just behind her were Melissa Antillion with a 14.7, Dallice Johnson with a 15.21 and Corrinne Hansen with a 16.97. Speaking of Corrine Hansen, she ran for the first time the 800 M run where she posted a 3:25.39. Corrinne was a true sport as she met the challege of a new race and though she hit the ‘wall’ at the 300 mark on her second lap, she gutted it out to the end where she still wore a smile on her face and said she’d be willing to run it again.
