Deila Joy Marsh Kirkham died at the age of 69 on Monday May 17, 2010 following an illness.
Joy was born Jan. 18, 1941 to Mearle Clyde Marsh and Delta Bowcutt in Riverside, Utah. She grew up in Willard, Utah on the family farm until she was 15. Her family then moved to Salt Lake City where she attended West High School. Joy excelled in music and academics and was a commencement speaker for her graduating class of 1959. She attended the University of Utah where she met her sweetheart, Hugh. They were married on June 20, 1964 and were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 22, 1964.
She graduated Cum Laude in Elementary Education and taught school full time for two years at which time she stayed home full time to take care of her growing family. Later she took up substitute teaching for many years and worked with the handicapped in various positions and programs. She served many years in the Cub Scout organization in Pack and District positions. She was also a Utah Hunter Safety Education instructor for 10 years. Since Joy and Hugh retired they have been working as Church Service Missionary Coordinators and visiting their children and grandchildren, especially during the grandchild boom of 2008.
Joy will be remembered by her loving husband, Hugh P. Kirkham and six children, Carolyn (Roy) Franklin, James (Jennifer) Kirkham, Anthony (Suzanne) Kirkham, Gregory (Jeanette) Kirkham, Russell Kirkham, David Kirkham; and 21 grandchildren and one great grandson, her sister, Doris (Graham) Shaw and brother, William D. Marsh. She was preceded in death by her parents and older brother, Mearle C. Marsh II.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Price LDS Seventh Ward Chapel (995 E. 700 N.) at 10 a.m. A viewing was held on Friday, May 21, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the Price Seventh Ward, and also on Saturday from 8:30-9:30 a.m. prior the services at the church. Interment was at 4 p.m. in the Willard Precinct Cemetery in Willard, Utah. Services were in the care of Fausett Mortuary.
