As part of the Carbon/Emery Emergency Preparedness Fair, June 18, the Crandall Canyon presentation, created for the Governors’s Summit, will air three times that evening in the Little Theater at the Emery Spartan Center.
This presentation is a touching look into the most recent mine accident and tragedy that stunned our locale as well as the state, Aug. 6, 2007. Six coalminers were trapped in the mine after a roof collapse. Later, on Aug. 16, 2007, the mine collapsed again when one of the walls of the tunnel exploded outwards, killing three rescue workers and injuring six others. The community pulled together in support of the miners, rescue workers and their families. This presentation will take a look at the full scope of the incident including rescue attempts, with insightful interviews and pictures of the ensuing impact on miners, emergency responders and the community. Sheriff LaMar Guymon will be on hand with brief remarks to facilitate the 30 minute presentation.
The Crandall Canyon Presentation will alternate three times with guest lecturer, Maralin Hoff, from the Utah Department of Public Safety. Hoff lectures all over the state and is often known as the “earthquake lady.” With Carbon and Emery counties close proximity to major fault lines and frequent tremors, earthquake disaster is a very real and dangerous hazard that may well impact this area. Knowledge of how to prepare to minimize the damage and also to preserve life and property is vital to those who live in the area.
Times will be posted at the Spartan Center so Fair goers can make plans to visit the booths and displays, enjoy a supper of free hot dogs and hamburgers and still have time to hear guest speaker, Ron Mosher, view the Crandall Canyon presentation, and learn how to prepare our homes and businesses to better survive a major earthquake. Be sure and make plans to attend the valuable Carbon/Emery Emergency Preparedness Fair on June 18 from 4-8 p.m.
