On July 7 at approximately 11 a.m. a call came into 911 saying a woman hiker had fallen in the Mary’s bathtub area in Straight Canyon. This area is east of the dam at Joe’s Valley.
The female fell down a steep embankment and had a compound fracture to her leg. The Emery County Sheriff’s Office and search and rescue team as well as the High Angle rope rescue responded. It was determined the area was too steep and littered with loose rock to attempt a rescue.
EMTs administered first aid to the woman on the mountain side. LifeFlight was notified and arrived on the scene. A technician was lowered down to the victim on a hoist cable. The technician and the victim were both raised to the helicopter. The helicopter then landed in the bottom of the canyon where traffic had been stopped. The patient was stabilized and then transported to Utah Valley Hospital where she underwent surgery to repair the broken leg.
The woman was hiking with a youth group at the time of the accident. The victim was identified as Mrs. Cunningham from Price.
