PRICE-Percy Kent Oviatt, age 64, passed away peacefully July 13, 2010 at home after a battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 7, 1945 in Price, Utah to Volmer and Rita Axelsen Oviatt.
Kent attended school in Price, graduating from Carbon High School and the College of Eastern Utah. He had a wide range of interests. Kent was an avid reader, and his favorite books were about Western American History, particularly military history. He was the consummate outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and fish. His knowledge of plants and animals in the wild was amazing. He trained hunting dogs, including several champions. Kent also loved to be outdoors in his well kept yard and garden.
Kent worked as a mechanic and later as a master electrician at Deer Creek and the Wash Plant, and in the control room at Cottonwood. In addition he operated his own handyman business. During the last several years Kent enjoyed serving in the Sunday School Presidency and at the Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his father, Volmer D. Oviatt, sisters, Peggy Hennings, both of Price; Susan (Henry) Etzel, Wellington; nephew, Michael Etzel and Jason Merrill, Salt Lake City; fiancee, Katie Jean Larsen, Ephraim; son, David Payton, Springville; friend and caretaker, Virginia Martinez, Helper; and his “brothers” of the 1st Platoon, who served in Vietnam during some of the war’s fiercest battles. These men have remained close friends for more than 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rita Oviatt; niece, Traci Tallerico; and brother-in-law, Bob Hennings.
Funeral service, Friday, July 16, 2010, 6:30 p.m. Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 East Main Street in Price, Utah. Per Kent’s request, interment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery in South Dakota at a later date.
