Chili-est Day at the Fair


Aug. 6 at 3 p.m. Open to all Emery County residents. (Chili must already becooked when you arrive).
Everyone bring your chili to be judged.
Everyone can help judge by tasting the chili and voting. Votes will be tallied and a prize will be given.

Registration is now open for the September 11, 2010 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before August 6, 2010. The national ACT September exam is the earliest college admissions test date of the school year.
The cost for the ACT test without writing is $33. When combined with the optional ACT Writing Test, the total cost is $48. Students who qualify may apply for a fee waiver through their high school counselor. The ACT website, www.actstudent.org

Emery High football begins


Practice for the upcoming season of Emery High football begins on Aug. 2 at 5 p.m. at Emery High. This is for all 9-12th grade boys who would like to participate. Prior experience not required. The black and gold football game is on Aug. 14 and games begin on Aug. 20.

Emery County Library Director Retires


Come to the Castle Dale Library and help Jerilyn Mathis celebrate her retirement. We will be having an open house Mon., August 2 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Ice cream will be served.
Jerilyn was hired April 3, 1974, as the librarian in Castle Dale. She became library director June 2, 1975. She retired July 1, 2010, after working more than 35 years for the county.

Critter Carnival


Kids come join us for Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church of Ferron, UT. It will be held July 28-30 from 9:00 a.m. to noon for ages 5 to 6th grade. Come learn Bible lessons about God’s creation and enjoy games, crafts, snacks, and more. Hope to see you there!!

Emery High Spardette Fundraisers


The Emery High Spardettes will be taking Old Fashioned Portraits of family, friends, and individuals at their booth at the Emery County Fair Aug. 6 and 7 at the Castle dale Park. Price will be $10 for an 8 x 10.
The Spardettes are also looking for someone who has an old junk car that they would be willing to donate to them to use at a fund raiser they are planning. Does not have to be in running condition. You wil receive a receipt that you can use as a tax donation. Call 749-0658.

Fundraiser For Carter McOmie


“A Breath of Life for Carter”
Carter McOmie is 3 years old and was born with a congenital heart defect. He is on oxygen all of the time because of lung disease from complications at birth. He is in need of a special machine that will help him play outside and travel easier. A booth will be set up at Huntington’s Heritage Days on July 2-3. They will be selling, raffling and auctioning donated items. Donations are being accepted at Wells Fargo or by calling Jessica @ 435-749-9451.
Any extra funds will be saved for Carter’s heart transplant which will be in the next few years.

The contest will help personalize our website. We want to feature photos of people in our community rather than the generic ones currently online. Free Resource Makes Applying for Student Financial Aid Easier


Self-guided presentation walks students through the sometimes-confusing financial aid application process. The Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority is very pleased to announce “Navigating the FAFSA,” a much-needed new resource to help students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (commonly called the “FAFSA”). This tool is a self-directed presentation that guides students through topics explaining the purpose of the FAFSA, how to obtain a PIN to sign their FAFSA securely online, what information should be gathered, how to complete the FAFSA, and how to submit it. Easily found on the front page of the UHEAA website, this presentation gives high school counselors and financial aid professionals another tool to help their students. A local veterans employment representative visits the Castle Dale DWS Office the first Wednesday of each month. CASA Volunteers Needed


Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children.
