Dear Editor:
I know, you know, most likely, even better than I, what a mess this world that we live is in. You probably wonder, much as I do, if there is something, if anything, that we can do about it. I know that most of this mess is bigger than my poor brain can comprehend. Questions like, how could it get to this point, why aren’t there people in our elected offices doing something about it, but mostly, what can I, Joan Powell, do about it, if anything?
I know, most of you know, that I’ve been following the “environmental movement” as much as my time, and my understanding, at this point of my life will let me. A lot of you feel the same way I do, it makes us very, very angry, that these people have positioned themselves to a point that they have so much power in our government.
I have been reading a book entitled, Liberty and Tyranny by Mark R. Levin. He is a lawyer, and a talk show host. Even though I have to keep a dictionary close by, to look up words I don’t understand, I have come to learn how these people, (environmentalists) have set themselves up to be in the positions they are in, and what their primary goal is. This movement started getting a stronghold back when Franklin Roosevelt was president, and how he threw out most of what was traditional, and started changing the meaning of the Constitution to accomplish his goals, starting with being the longest serving president evet. It was no more, by the people, for the people. It was the beginning of “big government”, and being in control. Anyway, I would urge you to get your hands on this book. I’m only in chapter six, and my eyes have been opened.
I know a lot of you know that the environmentalists are not going to stop until they reach their goal of 9 million more acres of wilderness to be taken away from us. One of the Carbon County commissioners, in the short time he had to talk to me, and he invited me back to talk some more, was worried. He had just returned from Washington D.C., and he said it’s grim. Our county is being held ransom, while SUWA and BBC (Bill Barrett Corporation) try to make some sort of agreements. Agreements that should not have to be made, if our government was allowed to function as a government. I have shed tears over this, as I know what is the right thing, and what we stand to lose if it comes to pass the way they, (BBC and SUWA), get their way. I also know what we stand to lose if BBC pulls out. I wish there was a way to have BBC stand with us for a little while longer. President Obama is on the verge of signing away a section of public land that is 40 miles wide and 75 mile long, from the San Rafael Swell to Duchesne County, for the new national monument. It’s looming, like dark clouds from a major storm.
Some of you know that the Wilderness Bill, that was submitted from Washington County, and was returned after it was “reviewed” wasn’t anywhere near what was originally submitted. Why? Because of government pressure from environmental pressure. Even though Emery County is doing the same thing, in good faith, it won’t come back the same. Why? Let me quote from a SUWA press statement in the Emery County Progress paper, dated Tuesday, June 29, 2010. “Today, the county is moving forward on crafting their own land use bill. We feel that our being directly involved at this point would put us in the difficult situation of needing to object to everything we disagree with, which could potentially be quite a bit. We’ve recently sent the county a letter advising them that since it seems that the process has moved beyond the ‘information gathering’ stage, while in no way are we abandoning the process, we are stepping back until their proposal is complete.”
(Or, in other words, in my mind, we (SUWA) don’t want to listen anymore to what the local people want, we’ll just wait until it gets to the federal government stage, where they are set up to override the locals, and then they’ll (SUWA) get what they want). (Continuing the quote)… “Our interest is and always has been (Thank You Mr. Wayne Owens)…America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act-protection of large wild landscapes in the San Rafael Swell, Desolation and Labryrinth Canyons. Once Emery County has completed their bill, we look forward to comparing it to ARRWA and working directly with them to address the differences. Until then, we remain interested in their proposal, (I wonder…why bother…other than to laugh at what the locals want), and will fully reengage whenever the county is ready to begin negotiations.” Quote, unquote. That about says it all, doesn’t it?
Read the Salt Lake Tribune, dated Friday, July 9, 2009. Front page, no less. I’ll bet you couldn’t pay the Tribune enough money to run on the front page, any kind of rebuttal to the lies that SUWA permeates the general public with. Unfortunately, most Utahn’s get what SUWA wants them to know, and you and I are left to suffer the consequences.
Last year, we had a TAKE BACK UTAH rally at the State Capitol Building. It was very well attended. I even ran into friends that came from as far away as Blanding and Monticello. I guess I’m asking, no, I’m begging you to set Aug. 28 aside, to attend this year’s rally, and make it even bigger in attendance than last year. It’s only a few hours out of your day, but can send a powerful message. It is what you can do.
I have two other places that I could be, and would probably be a lot more fun, as far as the word fun is concerned. But I also believe, there is strength in numbers, and we can pressure our elected officials also, if we are in the right places at the right times. It’s our state, it is our lives, that all this crap has do with, I believe we live in the greatest nation in the world, and there is a lot at stake in the next few years.
Please come and encourage your children and grandchildren to come also. It’s their future that is being shaped. Will they have freedoms, or complete government control to look forward to, it’s up to us to stand steadfast and immovable in the right things, and not succumb to pressure.
