Emery County students began the 2010-11 school year on Aug. 24. There are five new teachers in the district including: Haylie Horton-Cleveland Elementary-1/2 day kindergarten; Carli O’Neil-Castle Dale-second grade; Ky Horrocks-San Rafael-social studies; Kerry Goldman-Green River-language arts; Angela Barton-Ferron Elementary-1/2 day kindergarten.
The Emery County School District met in their final meeting before school began on Aug. 11. Supt. Kirk Sitterud gave the board members the coaches list for the year and it was approved.
The notice of asbestos containing material was published in the paper by the school board. This is part of a plan by the school district which outlines what will be done in the coming year for asbestos abatement.
Supt. Sitterud sent a copy of the new three year calendar for the school board members to review. It follows the same format as other years and he would like it approved earlier this year preferably September or October. Supt. Sitterud informed the board that Utah was not selected in Race to the Top funding from the federal government. Congress has passed a bill to help retain jobs in education, but the superintendent said he doesn’t have any more information than that, if funds will become available and how it will be distributed. If Emery County does see any of this money it will be used to offset the funds expended for growth in the elementary schools and will be used to cover the new hires.
A question of whether Huntington Elementary third grade will need another teacher was discussed. Right now 59 students are registered. Four of those are in the self-contained unit. The school year will begin with two classes and if a change is needed it will be implemented after the year begins.
Business administrator, Jared Black said the health insurance meetings went well and the attendance was good.
The opening institute was held on Aug. 23 and the topic was No Teacher Left Behind. The speaker expounded on the differences in the generations and how those differences should be addressed in a teaching environment. He taught the teachers how to work with the younger generation in a more efficient manner. The opening institute lasted until noon and a benefits fair with providers and information and lunch took place at the recreation building in Castle Dale.
Four new teachers have been added, one will replace a retiring teacher; 2.5 elementary positions have been added with a teacher at Castle Dale and Cleveland. At the secondary level teachers have been hired as replacements for teachers at San Rafael and Green River High. Some teachers have been moved around.
School board member Nanette Tanner joined the school board meeting, via skype from the Dominican Republic. Other board members present included: Royd Hatt, Laurel Johansen and Sam Singleton.
Projections and expected enrollment in the Emery School district is 2,228 students. There are 325 employees for the school district. Schools include: Emery High, Green River High, Bookcliff Elementary, Ferron Elementary, Cleveland Elementary, Cottonwood Elementary, Huntington Elementary and two junior highs including San Rafael and Canyon View.
In neighboring Carbon County they expect to begin the school year with 3,507 students. Their schools will open on Aug. 30 this year. They have 600 employees including all staff, custodial and technology workers. Their schools include, Sunnyside Elementary, Bruin Point Wellington, Sally Mauro, Creek View, Castle Heights, Helper Junior High, Mont Harmon Junior High, the Castle Valley Center, Carbon High, and the Lighthouse Alternative Learning Center.
