Ferron council finalizes Peach Days celebration

Remembering Our Heroes is the theme for this year’s Peach Days celebration. Events will kick off on Aug. 27 with the Miss Peach Blossom Pageant at Emery High 6 p.m. and on Aug. 28 Peach Queen Pageant – Emery High 7 p.m.
Sept. 7, race draw – 6 p.m. – fairgrounds historical site walking tour – Pick up map and information at City Hall.
Sept. 8, Exhibits accepted at City Hall from 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. – contact Angela 384-2735. Talent show and dessert contest – 6:30 p.m. at Mayor’s Park.
Sept. 9, floral exhibits and baked or cooked items due at City Hall by 10 a.m. Bike Ride – 6 p.m. Mayors Park – contact City Hall for information.
Sept. 10, exhibits on display at City Hall 8:30 a.m-5 p.m., walk-a-thon “Walk Away From Prescription Drugs,” sponsored by the Governing Youth Council. Meet at 5 p.m. in front of the Grub Box – $5 entry fee to go towards drug prevention – Call Lori 749-1395 or Brody 609-9224. Dinner and entertainment in the park – dinner at the Fairground Park from 6-7:30 p.m. Fireworks – 8:30 p.m. at Millsite Reservoir.
Sept. 11 Field of Flags – sunrise ceremony and program begins promptly at 7 a.m. at the church park, 50 West Mill Road- flags will remain on display until Monday. Breakfast – 7-9 a.m. at the Mayor’s Park. Fun run – 7:30 a.m. – meet in front of Ferron Elementary – contact City Hall for information. All day golf tournament scramble at Millsite Golf Course. Call Jordan at 384-2887 for more information. Parade – 10 a.m. Mill Road and State Street. Family fun day – fun and games at the Mayor’s Park immediately following the parade. Soapbox derby – races begin at Noon at 100 East and Mill Road. Contact City Hall for rules and sign up information. Open house at Emery Care and Rehab – 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., 455 West Mill Road. Exhibits on display at City Hall from Noon-5 p.m. Horse races – races will begin promptly at 1 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. Demolition derby following the races at approximately 6 p.m. Dance immediately following the derby in the multi purpose building at the fairgrounds. Ticket price to enter the Fairgrounds will be $7 per person or $25 per family and will admit you to the races, derby and dance.
New this year is the, “Remembering our heroes with a field of flags.”
Ferron leaders say, “Come unite with our community as we remember and honor the heroes who give so selflessly and those who have given their all. The awe-inspiring sunrise ceremony will begin promptly at 7 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the foot of the field located at 50 west 100 north in Ferron.
The amazing display of flags, open Friday evening, Sept. 10 through Monday, Sept. 13, is free to the public and will fly as a tribute to the heroes we all wish to honor and remember. Come walk through our field and feel with us the love of our fellow soldiers and country.”
City business included: “The flood we had hit the golf course pretty bad,” said Ferron Mayor JoAnn Behling. “The crew up there has done a marvelous job of clean up and needed repairs. Gratefully the new part of the golf course was not damaged very badly. It could have been a lot worse, it only needs some minor repairs.”
She added most of the damage was done to existing holes and the worst damage was on hole number six. Mayor Behling reported the clean up and mud removalfrom the greens and fairways is well underway.
Mayor Behling reported the internet installation for the buildings at the golf course should be completed sometime in the next few days. Councilman Mike Behling said he would follow up to ensure all is completed with that project.
Councilman Joe Trenery reported on the Southeastern Utah Junior Livestock Show. He said the show was well attended, and during the follow up meeting by the stock show committee, it was decided to help with installation of restrooms at the site. The committee will provide funds for construction and volunteers to do the work.
Councilman Garrett Hansen reported on the night golf tournament at the golf course. He said the committee cleared $704 dollars to help with work and improvements at the golf course. “Most all of the golfers had such a good time they requested this tournament be an annual thing,” Hansen said. “This was a really fun time,” he concluded. Hansen also reported the cart path on hole number seven is in need of repair and those repairs should not be complicated or expensive. During the winter months, the crew will be working on removing many of the rocks from the hills on hole number four to try to eliminate the time spent looking for lost balls.
The board of equalization presented two issues with water bills and both were approved. Councilman Ronny Bloomer reported one business license has been issued. He also requested there be signs installed at the fairgrounds to eliminate the dumping of grass clippings at that site.
Greg Killpack, representing his company, FAH, LLC., seeking preliminary approval from the council to continue work on the Canyon Subdivision on Canyon Road. He showed the council the plans for the subdivision with the delineated lots and the existing sewer/water/power connections.
“I would like to know about the animal rights on this property. Do they transfer over to the potential buyers?” asked Killpack. Mayor Behling explained the city ordinances concerning animals and the potential buyers would be responsible to check with the city for the personal needs in that area.
Killpack said all lots would be sold as is, and those with the existing utility connections would be fully disclosed to the buyers. Those without connections would also be fully disclosed. Mayor Behling asked Killpack to write a letter to the city stating that no more than nine lots would be sold and they would be sold by meets and bounds. Killpack agreed. The council approved the subdivision.
Brody Humphrey requested the council approve a walk-a-thon be held just prior to the dinner at Peach Days. He explained the route through Ferron and the money raised will be used to raise awareness of prescription drug abuse in the area. “The walk will be named Walk Away From Prescription Drugs, and we would like to make this an annual thing,” said Humphrey.
“I think this sounds like a good thing. This is a wonderful idea,” said Mayor Behling. The council approved the walk-a-thon. It will begin at 5 p.m. just prior to the dinner at the Peach Days celebration in September.
The city council members proceeded to prioritize the list of needs for curb/gutter/road projects to be completed by the Castle Valley Special Service District. This list will be submitted to the district for the work to be started next summer.
The council approved an annexation request for Chase and Chelsea Behling. This request has been through planning and zoning and has met with their approval. It was determined this annexation is in the city’s plan and was approved.
It was approved to purchase 150 folding chairs to be used during the Peach Days dinner and celebration. These chairs will be used with the new tables purchased last year. In addition to the outdoor seating at the dinner, these tables and chairs will be used inside the building, too.
An interlocal agreement between CVSSD and Ferron City was approved. This agreement specifies what projects can be done with the 15 percent of the class B and C road funds which Ferron City gives to the district each year. It was also approved to give the funds to the district.
