Early on in last Friday’s football game between the home Uintah Utes and the visiting Emery Spartans it appeared that neither team wanted to claim victory. After battling through the first quarter, Uintah led 3-2 after the period but Emery then took control of the game and won 27-16.
Emery managed to only pick up six yards of total offense in their first five series, as the Utes were very aggressive on defense and stymied the Emery offense.Emery’s only first quarter score came on a safety as the Emery defense tackled the Uintah quarterback in the end zone.
Uintah was equally dismal on offense as they only managed to pick up eight yards in their first six series. Uintah kicked a field goal after blocking an Emery punt in Emery territory. Uintah led 3-2 after period one.
Emery’s defense played well throughout the first half as Emery had three interceptions on those first three Uintah possessions. Nick Stoddard picked off the first and Quinn Montgomery picked off the next two as the Emery defensive backs covered well down field.
Emery had good field position after the third interception at the Emery 55 yard-line. Emery’s quarterback Cody Jones hit Stoddard in stride at around the 15-yard line and Stoddard strolled into the end zone and Emery took the lead back at 8-3. Point after kick was blocked.
Uintah came right back on their next series to score on a two yard run and led 9-8. Emery was not done in the first half though. Emery started a possession at their own 20-yard line. Jones hit Stoddard with a pass that covered 11 yards followed by a pass to Montgomery that covered 14 yards. Fullback Jade Fielder then romped up the middle for a 25-yard run to the Uintah 30 yard line. Jones then completed a pass to Kashe Potter in the left side of the end zone and Emery led 14-9 at the half. The two-point try was no good.
Emery scored on their first possession of the second half as they marched down field 80 yards. They were aided in their drive by a roughing the kicker call when Emery punted early on in the drive. Taylor Cox picked up six yards on the ground followed by picking up 15 yards as he caught a Jones pass. After Jones lost seven yards, Cox regained eight yards in two carries to bring up fourth down. Punter Stoddard was hit after he kicked the ball and Emery now had a first down at the Uintah 43-yard line. Colton Fasselin gained eight yards on a run, Jones picked up three yards, and Cox picked up 15 yards more on another run. Jones gained seven yards to the 10-yard line, Fielder picked up a yard and then Fasselin scored to put Emery up 21-9. Jesse Winn kicked the extra point.
Emery then scored on their first possession of the fourth quarter. The drive started at midfield after linebacker Clay Collard recovered a fumble by the Uintah quarterback.
Fasselin picked up a yard on the first play and Cox picked up 10 yards on the next play. Fielder gained two yards, Fasselin 11 yards and Fielder two more yards on three straight runs. On second and 13, Jones hit Stoddard in the right side of the end zone for another touchdown. Emery now led 27-9. Uintah scored on their last series of the game against
