Last week saw all tennis teams from regions 11 and 12 converge on St George to participate in the dual regionals for the opportunity to go to the state tournament. Emery’s second doubles team of Tanya Higbee and Shantelle Hansen played well in St George and finished second behind the team from Desert Hills High School.
Desert Hills High School won the meet, although no official team title was at stake since this tournament was only about seedings for the upcoming state meet, as they took all five titles for the second year in a row. Desert Hills is the defending state champion and are favored to come home with this season’s title also.
The Desert Hills team is made up of girls from the St George area that had all decided to play at Desert Hills when the school opened three years ago. St. George has an open enrollment policy that allows this action. All the girls play year round at the Green Valley tennis club and most are nationally ranked.
Emery’s first doubles team of Anna Turner and Marqui Moss finished fifth in the meet and Emery’s first single player, Whitney Withers finished sixth in the meet. They all will advance to the state tournament at BYU on October 8-9.
