The Dirty Rotten Scoundrels the musical was presented recently by the Emery High Drama Department. Neal Peacock was the director for the production.
This hilarious comedy is the musical adaptation of the popular movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels which starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine. The play was written by Jeffrey Lane with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and was presented at Emery High School through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International of New York.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is the story of two con men – Lawrence Jameson who has been cheating rich women out of their money in the south of France for many years and Freddy Benson who is the new, young, con man in town. After first working together, these two men come to understand that the French town of Beaumont Sur Mer is just not big enough for both of them and so a contest is arranged where each of them will try to con a young woman out of $50,000. The first one to take her for the $50,000 gets to stay and the other must leave town. They settle on a new tourist who has just arrived in town Miss Christine Colgate, the American Soap Queen, and suddenly the con is on.
A side story also involves Andre Thibault, the police chief of Beaumont Sur Mer and Muriel Eubanks a rich widow. Andre’s job is to keep Muriel from discovering the con and to keep her believing that Lawrence is a Prince in need of her money to return to his kingdom. Andre comes to believe that the only way he can keep her ignorance intact is to woo her – after all he is French. Add Jolene Oakes of Oakes, Okla. who is intent on marrying Lawrence and you have a recipe for hilarity.
The production involved 39 Emery High School students and starred Elise DeBry as Christine Colgate; Bryson Weaver as Lawrence Jameson; Tyrell Clements as Freddy Benson; Kalin Burr as Andre; Tennyson Fauver as Muriel and Adrienne Carter as Jolene Oakes. Marilee Cox was the music director. Music was provided by a small orchestra under the direction of Ben Carroll.
