The Emery High wrestling team went into the holiday break with a resounding 59-24 victory over a visiting Wayne wrestling team. Every match in this meet was decided by a pin or by forfeit.
Nathan Mecham, at 171 pounds and with a 15-8 season record, opened the meet with a second quarter pin after building a point’s lead of 11-4. This was a foreboding of what was to come. Brett Sorenson, at 189 pounds, won by forfeit but was penalized a point for facial hair.
Cody Dale, at 215 pounds, was pinned by his man in the first round. Decker Butcher at 285 won by forfeit and Emery led 17-6.
Wyatt Oveson, at 103 pounds and with a season record of 15-5, pinned his man in the first round. Cezly Collard, at 112 pounds and with a season record of 19-4, also pinned his man in the first round. Spencer Fehlberg at 119 pounds and Dillon Walls at 125 pounds were then recipients of forfeits. Fehlberg has a season record of 12-1 and Walls is 12-8. Emery now leads 41-6.
Adam Brinkworth at 130 pounds leads his opponent 5-2 after the first round and then finally pulls out a pin with 10 seconds left in round two. Wayne then went on a winning streak as they won the next three matches by pin. Tice Guymon at 135, Cole Guymon at 140 and Kennadee Byington at 145 were the Emery wrestlers.
Clay Collard, at 152 pounds, fell behind in the first round 2-4, took the lead in the second round at 8-5 and then pinned his man in the third round. Collard, with the pin, took his season record to 19-0 with this his 16th win by pin this season. Collard was the champion of his weight at the earlier Panguitch tournament.
Chet Funk, at 160 pounds and with a season record of 14-3, was the final Emery wrestler and pinned his opponent in the first round.
Emery has a 6-9-1 duels record, which includes the Manti Duels of last weekend. This team is coached this year by Doug Mecham, Reed Fehlberg and Jack Funk.
Coach Mecham talking about his team, “This team is a young team and we coaches are pleased with the progress this team is making and the heart they are showing. They are gaining valuable experience.” The veterans on the team are taking care of themselves as they work hard to improve and to represent themselves and the school well.
Emery will wrestle at the Tournament of Champions meet in Vernal on Jan. 8-9, 2011 and then will be home on Jan. 13 against Manti.
