It was a busy week for the Emery High boy’s basketball team. It was a week that included the first game after the holiday break, the opener of region 12 action and the rematch with rival Carbon High School. The Spartans won two of three but maybe, and this is more important, they played well as a team in the final game of the week, which should bode well for the future.
Emery defeated Union 57-54 to start the week in Castle Dale, traveled to Nephi where they lost to Juab 60-49 and then defeated Carbon at home 81-67.
First to the Carbon game. Before a big crowd in the Spartan Center, Emery battled back from a 14-point second quarter deficit to grab the 14-point victory. Carbon started the game on a 5-0 run, took the lead to 14-5 before winning the first quarter 26-17. In addition, Kash Jewkes, Emery’s starting center, picked up three early fouls and had to sit. Things at this point did not look promising for Emery.
Ty Benson kept Emery in the game with 12 first quarter points but Gage Bigelow did the same for Carbon. Carbon ran the lead to 33-19 to start the second quarter.Emery then went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to four points with Kashe Potter doing a lot of the damage for Emery.
Carbon ran the lead back to nine points at 40-31 before Emery narrowed the gap one more time to four points at the half as Carbon led 48-44. Bigelow led Carbon with 15 points and Clint Finkbiner scored 14 points. Benson scored 19 first half points to lead the Spartans and Potter chipped in 13 points. Nick Stoddard picked up foul number four in the second quarter to also be in foul trouble.
Carbon started the second half on a 5-0 run to take the lead to 53-44 after Emery had a pair of early turnovers.Emery then went on their own run and tied the score at 53-53 with 3:51 left in the period. It was at this point that Benson picked up his fourth foul of the game. Emery took their first lead of the ball game with 1:47 left in the third quarter at 57-56.
Emery outscored Carbon 19-10 in the third quarter and now led 63-58. Kashe Jewkes scored 11 points in the period as he took control in the low post and seemed to score at will. Quinn Montgomery picked up his fourth foul late in the third quarter to be the third Spartan with four fouls.
Emery took the lead to 73-58 as Emery scored the first 10 points of the final quarter. Bigelow finally hit a free throw with 4:06 left in the game to finally give Carbon a point. It had been a 29-5 run for Emery. Emery won the final period 18-9 and the ball game 81-67. With Potter and Chance Huntington also picking up their fourth personal fouls early in the fourth period, it was remarkable that only Stoddard fouled out of the game.
Jewkes led the way for Emery with 24 points, 20 in the second half, and nine rebounds. Benson finished the game with 19 first half points. Potter scored 16 points, had 10 rebounds and three assists. Montgomery scored 15 points including five of six free throws in the fourth quarter and had eight assists. Stoddard scored one point and had three rebounds. Off the bench, Chance Huntington scored four points and had 10 rebounds. Dallon Cologie came into the game when Benson got in foul trouble, scored two points but played an outstanding game in his time on the floor on both ends of the court as he gave Emery a spark.
In the Union game, Emery led 14-12 after the first quarter, the scored was tied 27-27 at the half, Emery led 43-33 after three periods and then held onto to win.
Benson led the team with 16 points but fouled out with 5:19 left in the game. Jewkes and Potter each scored 12 points and Jewkes fouled out with 2:58 left. Montgomery and Stoddard each scored six points with Gage Bell scoring three points and Huntington scoring two points.
In the loss at Juab, Emery fell behind early and stayed that way throughout the game. Juab led 47-30 after the third quarter ended before Emery had a little rally in the final period to narrow the gap. Potter led the way with 13 points, Benson scored 11 points, Jewkes scored nine points, Montgomery scored seven points, Cologie and Stoddard each scored three points, Jordan Cox scored two points and Huntington scored one point.
Emery plays twice at home this week. Wednesday they host Delta and on Friday they will host Manti as region 12 action continues. Game time for the varsity is 7 p.m.
