Born Sept. 21, 1930, in Orangeville, Emery County, Utah, to Jesse D. and Jeanette Crawford Peacock. Passed away peacefully on Jan. 14, 2011, at his home in South Jordan, Utah. Married Barbara Jean Olsen, his high school sweetheart on June 1, 1950, in the Manti LDS Temple. They celebrated their 80th birthdays and 60th wedding anniversary together last summer.
Jim’s home for 40 years was Orangeville, Utah. He grew up with his sisters Afton and Elaine, farming and running the Peacock Cash Store with his parents. He cherished the hunting, fishing, and hard work that he shared with his dad. His blessed mother taught him responsibility and values, and insisted he get a good education. He graduated with his life-long friends from South Emery High School in 1948. He attended Carbon Junior College and received his B.S. and Masters Degree in Education Administration from BYU. He taught and coached in Emery County schools for many years, serving as principal of Orangeville Elementary School. He represented Emery County in the Utah State Legislature for one term.
Jim moved his family to Midvale, Utah, in 1969 to accept employment as the Director of Governmental Relations for the Utah Education Association. After 10 years at UEA he became Executive Director of the Utah Petroleum Association in 1981. He retired in 1997. After retirement, he enjoyed his two terms on the Utah Board of Oil, Gas, and Mining serving as Chairman his last term. He was a highly respected educator and lobbyist. Jim was a life long member of the LDS Church serving in many positions, most notably many decades as gospel doctrine teacher in two wards.
His wife and family were his dearest treasures. He is survived by his sweetheart, Barbara, and five of their six children: Jan (Jae) Hanson, Sharon McCully, Carol (Craig) Peacock, Lee (Cathy) and Scot (Jennifer). His beloved son James, and his wife Kelly, passed away last year. He is also survived by his grandchildren who made him very proud: Liza, Jeff, Jamie, Natalee, Michelle, JD, Mark, Kyle, Wade, Nathan, Spencer, Jonathan, Andrew, David, Jake, Sage, and Sadi, and eight great-grandchildren.
A viewing was held at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. So. Jordan Parkway (10400 S.) South Jordan, Utah on Monday, Jan. 17, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the River Ridge Eighth Ward, 10168 S. 1100 W, South Jordan, at 12 noon. A viewing will be held at 10:45 a.m. for one hour before the service. Interment will be in the Orangeville, Utah, City Cemetery, on Wednesday, Jan. 19. A brief service will be held in the Orangeville Second Ward Relief Society Room at 11 a.m. Graveside Service immediately following.
