Coach Heidi Kay knew going into this year that it would be one of learning lessons. She had very few returning starters and a whole new set of teams to face. As the team is over half way through their first season as a 1A school it has been mostly a learning experience. The team lost 64-51 to Green River on Tuesday and then 52-25 to Monticello on Friday.
Against Green River, on Tuesday, PCA was trailing 54-27 as they headed into the final quarter of play. But the team found their rhythm and outscored the Pirates 24-10 to make it a much closer score then it had been most of the game. Haley Spiagrelli was top Panther with 15 points. Monique Hullings followed with 14.
On Friday the number four ranked 1A school in the state came in to Pinnacle to face the Lady Panthers. The Lady Bucks did what they needed to do to keep themselves on top of their game. But PCA played some solid defense to hold them to 52 points. The Panthers also ran some good offense, but just couldn’t finish it off and get their shots to drop.
Coach Kay is still adjusting to having teams that won championships in the smaller athletic association to losing at the 1A level.
“We are trying and hopefully learning.” she admitted, “But we have a long way to go.”
As far as the game against Monticello she added, “We could have played better offense, we still have trouble finishing it. Tonight we just couldn’t get out shots to drop I am hoping we can get a win this weekend against Navaho Mountain.”
The team has a pair of home games again this week with Navaho Mountain on Friday night and then Monument Valley on Saturday. Games will start at 5:00 followed by the boys at 7:00.
