Cougar boys and girls basketball champions

The 2011 basketball season for the Castle Valley Junior High Association came to an end on Feb. 16 with the varsity year-end tournament being held at Canyon View Junior High School in Huntington. The Canyon View girls and boys teams swept the titles this season. The girls team defeated San Rafael 35-27 and the boys team defeated Mont Harmon 68-49.
The tournament opened on Tuesday with the San Rafael girls defeating Helper and with Canyon View defeating Mont Harmon. On the boys’ side, Canyon view defeated Helper on Tuesday while Mont Harmon defeated San Rafael.
In the girls championship game, Canyon View and San Rafael were tied after the first quarter at 8-8. Canyon View won the second period 15-6 with the Cougars leading at the half 23-14. Canyon View was able to maintain that lead for the rest of the game.
Scoring for the Cougars in the game were Ashlynn Allred with 12 points, Bailey Rasmussen with nine points, Melece Pulli with six points, Paytn Jeffs with four points and Elly Stephens and Sarah Collard with two points each.
Scoring for the Bulldogs were Cassidy Labrum with eight points, Kambrie Hinkins with three points and Sabrina Copeland, Ashton Bell, Emily Olsen and Lexie Huntington with four points each.
For the Cougar boys team, Dillon Wilstead led the team with 18 points. Also scoring were Ridge Nielson with 11 points, McKlane Allred with eight points, Jackson Jensen with seven points, Dominic Rondinelli with six points, Austin Boren with five points, Slayde Childs with four points, Tai Justice with three points and Tanner Lake and Marco Mota with two points each.
For the Pirates, the leading scorer was Max Morley with 14 points with Garrett Blanc right behind with 12 points. Also scoring was Derek Weston, Kaiden Lewis and Dallyn Mower each with four points. Cole Fossat had three points and Blake Bean scored two points to finish the Mont Harmon scoring in the game.
It was just interesting to note that the leading scorers on each team were all eighth graders at their respective schools.
