David F. Owens, 74, a former Emery County Sheriff’s Captain accused of four counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, died Wednesday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Emery County Attorney’s Office reports that Owens’ body is at the State Medical Examiner’s office for determination of the official cause of death.
The county attorney on Thursday filed a motion in Seventh Judicial District Court to dismiss the charges.
Owens, a Ferron resident, was charged on Feb. 9 after the State Bureau of Investigations found the alleged crimes occurred in Emery County between 1997 and 2007.
