CLAWSON – Melvin Layne Gregersen, age 74, passed away March 19, 2011. Melvin was born Sept. 2, 1936 in Castle Dale to Ever and Blye Stilson Gregersen. Being born and raised in Castle Dale, Melvin attended South Emery High where he participated in track.
After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for 10 years. While serving his country in Japan, Melvin met his sweetheart of 53 years, Toshiko. They were married at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan on May 22, 1957. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
When he and Toshiko returned to the U.S., they lived in New Mexico, Colorado, and Iowa. While in Iowa, he worked as a Dental Lab Technician. He also taught at the University of Iowa for 15 years. They returned to Castle Dale where they lived for five years before settling in Clawson. He worked as a security guard at the Crandall Canyon Mine and the Power Plant. Melvin enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and gardening. He was a member of the LDS Church and served in many capacities. Melvin is survived by his wife, Toshiko; his mother, Blye Stilson Gregersen of Castle Dale; children: Niomi (Cory) McFarlane of Clawson, Layne (Marcie) Gregersen, Rinji Gregersen, and Koji (Hollie) Gregersen, the former three all of Price; siblings: Larry (Wilma) Gregersen of Clawson, Russell Gregersen of Las Vegas, Nev. Phyllis (Ben) Cline of Kansas City, Kan; a sister-in-law, Mia Xuan Gregersen of Castle Dale; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ever Gregersen; a brother, Fred Gregersen; and a sister-in-law, Sara Gregersen.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 25, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Castle Dale LDS 8th North Building (165 West 800 North). There will be a viewing Friday from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. at the church prior to the services. Interment will be in the Castle Dale City Cemetery. Military Rites will be provided by Ferron American Legion Post 42. Services are in the care of Fausett Mortuary.
