The first half of region 12 softball action came to a close last week with the Emery Spartans splitting a pair of region contests. Emery lost a game to North Sanpete on Tuesday and then defeated Delta on Friday as Emery finished the half at 3-2. Manti leads the region with a 4-0 record.
Looking at 3-A softball, Grantsville and Bear River lead region 11 with 4-0 records while Union leads region 10 with a 4-0 record and Canyon View leads region 9 with a 4-1 record. The region leaders should be the teams to beat as the state playoffs near.
Emery defeated Delta 7-0 as junior Whitney Roper had a good outing on the mound. Roper struck out 12 Rabbit batters including three in the final at bat for the Rabbits.
Roper gave up two base hits in the game, walked a single batter and hit two batters with a pitch.
For Emery, sophomore Bryton Hess led the team by going three for four with the bat, scored two runs and had an RBI. Sophomore Jeridi Price also went three for four with bat with one of those hits being a double. Roper and Shelby Mason also had doubles in the game. Emery finished the game with 13 base hits.
Emery scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third inning and four in the fourth inning for their scoring.
Against North Sanpete, the Spartans grabbed an early 8-1 lead before losing the game 12-10. This is probably one of those games that Emery should have won but didn’t. Three fielding errors and probably some mental errors led to the downfall of Emery in the game.
Emery had 11 base hits in the game with five of those coming in the first two innings. Emery also picked up five walks in those first two innings.
In this game, Hess hit a triple with Mason and Price picking up doubles. Hess went three for three in this game, scored a run and had three RBIs. Makiah Sherman and Auminee Bennett each had a pair of hits for the Spartans.
Emery will host Richfield this Tuesday for their lone game of the week due to the spring break. Emery defeated Richfield at Richfield and will attempt to sweep the series this season.
