Vehicle accident results in fatality
On April 21, a call came into the Emery County Sheriff’s Office about a missing person in the Cedar Mountain area. A deputy responded and searched the area but due to darkness he was limited to main roads. The search resumed Friday morning.
Emery County Sheriff’s Office received a call on Friday morning stating that friends of the victim had located the vehicle. Deputies responded and confirmed it was a fatality. The name of the victim is not being released until the family is notified. This appears to be a single vehicle accident, alcohol seems to be a factor and no seat belts were used.
Committee says thanks for Every 15 Minutes program
We would like to send out a huge thank you for all those in the community who helped out with the “Every 15 Minutes” activity on April 7, at Emery High School. This activity took a lot of time, energy, and effort from many committed individuals to make it amazingly effective. Emery County is such a great place to live, and this just proved to us once more how much we love to call Emery County our home.

Cleveland Town invites everyone out to Spring Expo on April 30
The Cleveland Fire Department will sponsor the Cleveland Spring Expo this Saturday, April 30, at the Cleveland Fire Station, 130 W. Main from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. The Expo will include vendors, crafts, raffle, entertainment, food and featuring the “Cleveland’s Own” booth, which highlights local crafters and artisians. There is no admission fee and everyone is welcome to attend. There will be entertainment throughout the day and raffle prizes drawn hourly. All proceeds benefit the Cleveland Days Firework display. Come eat, shop and find something for the special mother in your life.
The Cleveland Fire Department will be on hand to cook their special recipe hamburgers and hot dogs. They are also accepting donations to add to their spectacular 24th of July fireworks display this summer.
This is the second year of this event which began last year as a celebration for the completion of the new Cleveland fire station. The event was so well received it was determined it should become an annual event in the town.
New AARP driver safety class
AARP and the Castle Dale Senior Center have scheduled the next driver safety class on May 3. The new four hour class will be held at the Senior Center, 160 East 100 North from 1-5 p.m.
Students who have taken the driver safety classes in the past have found the material presented informative and useful in assisting them in their driving. Topics to be addressed include: the importance of vision and the changes that take place as people age, also how reaction time and flexibility is affected as people age, the impact and importance of hearing while driving, and how the older driver may compensate for these changes.
The course, for drivers older than 50, also includes: information on defensive driving techniques, newest traffic laws, how to handle potential problem situations while performing right and left turns, right-of-way laws freeway driving, driving around trucks and buses, and what to do if confronted by aggressive drivers or drivers committing road rage. The proper use of ABS (anti-lock brakes), airbags and safety belts(remember they are safety belts if you use them or seat belts if you sit on them), how to assess one’s own and other’s driving abilities will also be included. No tests will be given. There is a nominal fee for both AARP members and those not belonging to AARP. Even though the class has been reduced to four hours, those completing the course will still be eligible to receive a discount on the auto insurance premium.
A CarFit program will be taught in conjunction with the driver safety class. This program will be held from 10 a.m.-noon in the Senior Center parking lot. This free interactive and educational program was developed by the American Society of Aging, in collaboration with AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association is designed to improve driver safety for the older driver.
There will be an occupational therapist and trained technicians to provide information to ensure the safest fit for older drivers and their personal vehicles. Each participant will be given a 12-point checklist with their own vehicle and give recommended car adjustments, and adaptations that could make their car “fit” better to enhance driver safety. Participants are asked to pre-register for a convenient time slot in order to have as many as possible to complete the two hour session. Lunch to follow.

Bookcliff Muzzleloaders Spring Shoot
The shoot will be held May 6-8 at a new location one mile south of Buckhorn Reservoir on the San Rafael Swell. Friday 6 p.m.: Team shoot, hawk and knife throw. Saturday 9:30 a.m.: Paper and gong shoot, Mtn man run, pistol shoot. Sunday 9 a.m.: Shotgun shoot, flintlock shoot, knock down, gong fun shoot. Princess Tea Party Fundraiser 2011

You Can Help
Natasha Nicole Brinkerhoff, the daughter of Dave and Joan Brinkerhoff of Orangeville, is a 19 year old vibrant girl. In 2009 she was diagnosed with Melanoma skin cancer localized on her head. She beat that cancer like a champ.
But on April 5, she was diagnosed with stage IV Melanoma in her lungs, the most severe type of melanoma. She has tumors all over her lungs. Treatment will cost up to hundreds and thousands of dollars.

Utah Center for Rural Health Health Career Exploration Camp
High School students interested in a future health care career are invited to participate in the annual Health Career Exploration Camp at Southern Utah University. The camp will take place June 20 – 22 and is open to all 10th – 12th grade high school students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA (students who have finished their 9th grade year prior to camp are eligible to attend).
The camp is designed to teach students about health care careers in a hands-on learning environment with health care professionals. Participants will participate in 7 different workshops, as well as participate in the SUU-Rocky Mountain Power Challenge Course to learn leadership skills. Workshops are hands-on and teach students about careers such as: Veterinary, Dentistry, Doctor, Nurse, Pharmacist, Medical Technologist, Respiratory Therapy and many more. Group activities, including keynote speakers and an outdoor dinner and dance are also included.
Cost for the camp is $100.00, which includes housing during the camp at The Eccles Living & Learning Center, meals, workshop supplies and a camp t-shirt. Scholarships are available to reduce or waive the cost of camp for individuals who qualify based on household income. Transportation to and from Southern Utah University is up to the individual attendee.
The Health Career Exploration Camp is sponsored by the Utah Center for Rural Health at Southern Utah University. Manti La Sal National Forest Ferron Ranger District
Public comment is now being accepted on input to construct a one mile trail
in the Potters Pond/Miller Creek area. The proposal would decommission 1.0
mile of road that goes through several wetland areas which contributes to
the flow of the head waters of Paradise Creek.
The new trail would be open to OHV’s 60 inches or less with four or more low
pressure tires, including motorcycles.

Veteran Needs Help
Perk Allred is 76 years old and spent 20 years serving our country. He has lived most of his life in Emery County. Allred is now battling cancer. He recently discovered a leak in his home that has done considerable damage. He has to have extensive repairs to his home and needs help to accomplish this. Self-guided presentation walks students through the sometimes-confusing financial aid application process. The Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority is very pleased to announce “Navigating the FAFSA,” a much-needed new resource to help students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (commonly called the “FAFSA”). CASA Volunteers Needed
Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Angels Have Wheels
All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they maybe eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare. Help With Inhalers
The in home Rx programs makes available breathing medications and nebulizers to patients who may have asthma, emphysema or COPD at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Call 1-800-344-5764 or visit the web site www.inhomerx.com for more information on the details of this program.
Senior Mobility
The Senior Mobility Program makes available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled, power electric wheelchairs at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Call 1-800-451-0971 to see if you qualify.
Utah Valley Cancer Center
Utah Valley Cancer Center, located at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center has a new toll-free phone number. Anyone can call 1-866-549-3800 to schedule an appointment, get information about local cancer support groups or to find out more about IHC cancer services and physicians. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Senior Wheels USA Program makes available power (electric) wheelchairs to senior citizens (65 years and older) and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Call toll free at 1-800-246-6010.
Free Wheelchairs to the Disabled
The Wheelchair Foundation, Intermountain Healthcare, and the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation are partnering to distribute free wheelchairs to disabled Utahns. Persons interested in getting a free wheelchair can call 1-877-387-3839, or apply at www.wheelchairfoundation.org/utah
Salvation Army
Donations are needed from Emery County residents to the Emery Chapter of the Salvation Army which provides emergency assistance for the people of Emery County as well as people traveling through the area.
