Forest Service warnings for flooding streams
An extremely wet spring, coupled with cool spring temperatures has prompted the Manti-La Sal National Forest to issue a caution to those visiting the forest during the next few weeks. Roads can be saturated with mud, or blocked with snow drifts. Do not attempt to travel on them. In some cases roads are gated, but in others snow is still below the gate.
Mud slides and rolling rocks are common on the forest this time of year, and may be even more prevalent this spring due to extremely wet soils. Creeks and streams are running high and become higher and faster during mid-day when temperatures rise.
Avoid camping along streams, rivers, washes and steep drainages. Visitors should use extreme caution when recreating around fast moving streams or rivers. Watch children and pets at all times, and avoid crossing streams and rivers.
In some areas streams are already at 1983 levels, according to Jeff Gardner, ranger on the Sanpete District. “If it warms suddenly and a lot more water comes down, there are isolated areas on the north end of the Forest that may need to be closed.”
Some roads are currently closed and will be opened when conditions permit. They are: Rock Canyon, Horn Mountain, Millers Flat and Maple Canyon.
Remember to carry extra blankets, food, water and clothing when traveling in the outdoors this time of year. Be sure to let someone know where you are going and be prepared for the unexpected. Be aware of your surroundings and sudden changes that can occur as snow melts during the day.

Castle Dale Library to begin Saturday hours
The Castle Dale Library will be opening its doors on Saturdays beginning June 4. The Saturday hours will be from 9:30 a.m – 5 p.m. and there will be a story time at 1 p.m.
Bookcliff Muzzleloaders Spring Shoot
The shoot will be held May 6-8 at a new location one mile south of Buckhorn Reservoir on the San Rafael Swell.
Friday 6 p.m. Team shoot, hawk and knife throw. Saturday 9:30 a.m. Paper and gong shoot, Mtn man run, pistol shoot. Sunday 9 a,m. Shotgun shoot, flintlock shoot, knock down, gong fun shoot. Natasha Nicole Brinkerhoff, the daughter of Dave and Joan Brinkerhoff of Orangeville, is a 19 year old vibrant girl. In 2009 she was diagnosed with Melanoma skin cancer localized on her head. She beat that cancer like a champ.
But on April 5, 2011 she was diagnosed with stage IV Melanoma in her lungs, the most severe type of melanoma. She has tumors all over her lungs. Treatment will cost up to hundreds and thousands of dollars.
Anyone wishing to help out Natasha and her family may donate through an account that has been set up at Zions Bank in the name of Tasha Brinkerhoff.

Forest Service to discuss plans for prescribed burn
The Manti-La Sal National Forest is sponsoring an informational open house May 12 from 5-7 p.m. at the Emery County Courthouse in Castle Dale. It will be held in the Canyon Room. The Forest Service will explain its plans for the Graben prescribed burn this season and the following seasons in the area north of the Reeder Canyon Drainage and south of the Potters Canyon Drainage. The burn is being called Graben Rx and will take place when weather and fuel conditions are most favorable, sometime in late June or early July. A number of specialists from the Forest Service will be at the meeting to discuss the burn plans and to answer any questions regarding the prescribed burn and the use of fire as a management tool. Sunnyside Rodeo Royalty Contest
The Sunnyside 61st Annual Rodeo will be held July 8-9. The royalty contest will be held June 26 at 5 p.m. in the Sunnyside arena.
Royalty consists of Queen, first and second attendant – 13 years and up. Attendants may compete until they make Queen. 2 Princesses – 12 years and under may rein for 2 years as princess then compete for Queen’s court at age 13. The contestants age is their age the day of the contest.

$1,000 prize offered in Poetry Contest
A $1,000 grand prize is being offered to the last poet standing in a contest sponsored by Rainbow Fine Arts. Utah Center for Rural Health Health Career Exploration Camp
High School students interested in a future health care career are invited to participate in the annual Health Career Exploration Camp at Southern Utah University. The camp will take place June 20 – 22 and is open to all 10th – 12th grade high school students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA (students who have finished their 9th grade year prior to camp are eligible to attend).
The camp is designed to teach students about health care careers in a hands-on learning environment with health care professionals. Participants will participate in 7 different workshops, as well as participate in the SUU-Rocky Mountain Power Challenge Course to learn leadership skills. Workshops are hands-on and teach students about careers such as: Veterinary, Dentistry, Doctor, Nurse, Pharmacist, Medical Technologist, Respiratory Therapy and many more. Group activities, including keynote speakers and an outdoor dinner and dance are also included.
Cost for the camp is $100.00, which includes housing during the camp at The Eccles Living & Learning Center, meals, workshop supplies and a camp t-shirt. Scholarships are available to reduce or waive the cost of camp for individuals who qualify based on household income. Transportation to and from Southern Utah University is up to the individual attendee.
The Health Career Exploration Camp is sponsored by the Utah Center for Rural Health at Southern Utah University. Manti La Sal National Forest Ferron Ranger District
Public comment is now being accepted on input to construct a one mile trail
in the Potters Pond/Miller Creek area. The proposal would decommission 1.0
mile of road that goes through several wetland areas which contributes to
the flow of the head waters of Paradise Creek.
The new trail would be open to OHV’s 60 inches or less with four or more low
pressure tires, including motorcycles.

Veteran Needs Help
Perk Allred is 76 years old and spent 20 years serving our country. He has lived most of his life in Emery County. Allred is now battling cancer. He recently discovered a leak in his home that has done considerable damage. He has to have extensive repairs to his home and needs help to accomplish this. Free Resource Makes Applying for Student Financial Aid Easier
Self-guided presentation walks students through the sometimes-confusing financial aid application process. The Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority is very pleased to announce “Navigating the FAFSA,” a much-needed new resource to help students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (commonly called the “FAFSA”). This tool is a self-directed presentation that guides students through topics explaining the purpose of the FAFSA, how to obtain a PIN to sign their FAFSA securely online, what information should be gathered, how to complete the FAFSA, and how to submit it. CASA Volunteers Needed
Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children.
