With one game left in the 2011 regular season, the Emery High Spartan baseball team is fighting for positioning in the upcoming 3-A state tournament with Richfield and Manti. Delta will be the region 12 champion this season no matter what the outcome might be of the last game on Tuesday.
With one game to go, Delta has won and North Sanpete has been eliminated from post-season play with Juab relegated to the fifth place in the region and the final play-off spot. In the middle sits Richfield at 6-3 with Manti and Emery at 5-4. Emery hosts Delta in their final game while Richfield will battle with the hapless Hawks. North Sanpete has been outscored in region action 99-16 this season. Manti and Juab will play in the final game. We will know results Tuesday night in this close battle.
In Emery action last week, Emery hosted 2-A power Gunnison on Tuesday and lost the game 12-4. Gunnison scored five runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the sixth inning in getting the win. Emery scored a single run in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings.
On Friday, Emery traveled to Mt. Pleasant and hammered the Hawks by a score of 18-5. Emery scored at least one run in every inning while putting 17 pitches in play. Tappan Draper led the way for Emery as he went five for five at the plate and also had a walk in the game. One of Draper’s hits was a home run and another went for a triple. Draper also had five RBIs and scored four runs in the game.
Gage Bell was right behind with four hits in the game including a triple and a double. Bell scored three runs and also had five RBIs. Curtis Mason had three base hits including two that were doubles. Mason also scored three times.
While the Hawk pitching staff was serving up all these base hits, they were also serving up just plain hits as in hit batsmen. Hawk pitchers picked off eight Emery batters in this game. Nick Stoddard just happened to be the lucky recipient of three of those bad pitches as he got hit his last three times at bat. Geren Payne got hit twice in the game and Nathan Mecham, Gage Bell and Kash Jewkes each got hit once.
If Emery manages to finish third in region, they will travel this Saturday to Canyon View High School in Cedar City for the first round of the playoffs. If Emery finishes fourth, they will travel to Carbon High School for the first round of action.
