HELPER-Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and devoted friend to all, Edith Brackett Tonc, passed away quietly on May 5, 2011 after a brief illness at the age of 88.
Edith was born on Sept. 9, 1922 in Helper to Vincent and Antoinette Bianco Brackett.
Married her sweetheart and love of her life, Anton “Tony” Tonc, on Sept. 19, 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah; he passed away on Feb. 8, 2006.
She was a lifelong resident of Helper. Edith attended county schools and graduated from Carbon High School in 1940. She was an extreme advocate of education and hard work.
Edith and Tony spent their entire lives living, working, and raising their family in Helper, and were so very proud of and committed to their family, dear friends and Italian and Slovenian heritages. She was a great supporter and tremendous fan of all sports organizations throughout the county for years, local baseball, basketball and football.
Edith was very active in sports while she was growing up and excelled in many events, that in those days were strictly set up for men only. Bowling was a passion for many years, and she and her sister Netta were inducted into the King Koal bowling Hall of Fame in 2003.
She thoroughly enjoyed her trips to Wendover with family and friends. Edith was famous for her love of puzzles, crossword, Sudoku and any other challenge to her very inquisitive mind. Her greatest love was her family of whom she was so very proud. She enjoyed family gatherings, dinners and sharing stories of days gone by.
It has often been reported that Edith and Tony could really tear up the dance floor with either the polka or waltz.
They raised two wonderful sons, Anton J. Tonc and Vincent F. Tonc. She took great pride watching her sons play sports as they were growing up. Her family was her most important possession and she always put them first. Edith was a lifelong member of the Stella D’America Italian Lodge 77. She enjoyed attending all of the lodge functions. She worked as a secretary at Helper Junior High School, Helper State Bank, and Helper City as assistant recorder.
Her work here on earth is complete and she has gone to be the angel in heaven we all know and love. Mom, we love you so very much and will greatly miss the joy, happiness, strength and love that you have instilled in every life that you touched.
Survived by her sons, Anton Tonc, Sandy; Vincent (Sheila) Tonc, Butte, Mont.; sister, Netta Burton, Helper; brother-in-law, Louie (Madeline) Tonc, Spring Glen; five grandchildren, Tony, Nick, Aaron, Andrea, Shannon; three great-grandchildren, Zach, Jordann and Madison.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, Anton J. (Tony) Tonc; brothers, John Bianco and Louie Brackett; sisters, Mary Regruto and Katie Ori; dear daughter-in-law, Susan Tonc; granddaughter, Brandi Leigh Tonc.
Funeral Mass Monday, May 9, 2011, 10 a.m., St. Anthony Catholic Church, Helper. Vigil service Sunday evening 7 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family was be at Mitchell’s Sunday and Monday one hour prior to services. Committal service Mt. View Cemetery, Helper.
