PRICE- Our beloved mother, yia yia, aunt, sister, and friend to all, Virginia Varanakis Poulos, age 87, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2011.
Born Aug. 30, 1923 in Valdez, Colo. to Greek immigrant parents, Nick and Georgia Saras Varanakis.
Married her high school sweetheart Ted Alex Poulos in Price, Utah Aug. 17, 1947. They spent 47 wonderful years together. He passed away May 31, 1995.
Virginia started her career working at the mining company store in Kenilworth, Utah. She spent 28 years working for Carbon Emery Bank, later known as Zions Bank, where she provided personal banking assistance to many.
She and her husband owned and operated Ted’s Day/Nite Laundry and Dry Cleaning for 25 years. A devout member of the Greek Orthodox Church she served in the philoptohos, the choir and on the church board. She loved cooking and having her family around her. We enjoyed many wonderful dinners and happy family gatherings at mom’s table. Special thanks to Dr. Carole Baraldi and the staff of Emeritus who went over and above to care for our mother for the past six years.
Survived by her daughters, Georgene (Bob) Porter, Las Vegas, Nev., Pamela (Ted) Makris, Bountiful, Utah; special nephew, Dr. George (Glenna) Hatsis; grandchildren, George, Alexandra and Ahnika Makris, Ted Alex Poulos; brother, Mike (Sylvia) Varanakis; sister-in-law, Florence Vanzant; many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ted; son, Alex; sister, Julie Hatsis.
Funeral service, Tuesday, June 21, 2011, 11 a.m. Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 61 South 200 East, Price.
Trisagion service, Monday, June 20, 2011, 7:30 p.m. Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 East Main Street, Price. Family will receive friends at Mitchell Funeral Home Monday and Tuesday one hour prior to services. Committal, Price City Cemetery. In memory of Virginia family suggests contributions to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 688, Price, Utah 84501.
