Ashlynn Allred has qualified to participate in the 2011 USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships July 26-July 31 at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan.
Allred, running for the Mercury Track Club out of Salt Lake City, qualified in three events at the Region 11 track meet the last weekend of June in Nampa, Idaho. Ashlynn runs in the intermediate division, which is for 14 and 15 year olds.
Allred won the 100-meter run in a time of 12.58 seconds. She broke the previous record that was set in 1991 by a girl out of Wyoming. Allred then finished second to a girl out of Billings, Mont. in the 200-meter run. Her time in this race was 26.58. Both girls broke the old record that was also set in 1991, this time by a young lady out of Montana.
Allred also ran a leg on a 4×100 meter relay team that finished first and came within .03 seconds of breaking the region record in that event.
Allred ran at the Utah championships a week earlier at Utah Valley University. At this meet, she won the 100-meters, the 200-meters, and the 400-meters and was on the relay team that finished first in the 4×100.
Allred’s time in the 100-meter run would have tied her for second at the just completed 3-A Utah State track meet at BYU. Her time in the 200-meter run would have put her in sixth place.
The United States is divided into 16 regions. Region 11 consists of Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Competition takes place in six two-year age divisions with athletes generally falling between the ages of 8 and 18.
