Price man struck by lightning on Wedge

By By

A 56-year old Price man was struck and killed by lightning at the Wedge Overlook on July 11.
Joseph Louis Geiser was struck by lightning while he was out in the area of the Wedge Overlook, about 20 miles east of Castle Dale, out in the San Rafael Desert.
Emery County authorities responded to a call at 3:55 p.m. of a report that a man was struck by lightning near the Wedge Overlook.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene where CPR was already being performed on Geiser by a family member who was with him. Despite their efforts, emergency personnel were unable to revive Geiser and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Geiser and his wife and grandaughter and one of her friends were on an outing at the Wedge.
When the storm started Geiser instructed his wife and family members to get back in the van. Geiser was standing near the edge when he was struck by the lightning. His wife immediately began CPR while his grandaughter called 911 and remained on the line with the dispatcher. Several Emery County officers responded to the scene. A report was made to the medical examiners office and Geiser was transported by Fausett Mortuary.
Two days after this lightning death a scout was struck at Scofield while attending scout camp and died from the strike.
Another scout was injured by the same lightning strike as the two boys were together at the time.
