A bicycle/automobile accident occurred on Saturday at approximately 6:18 p.m. near the town of Cleveland. On SR-155 at mile post three, a small child on a bicycle was unable to stop and entered the roadway where he was struck by a westbound Toyota Avalon. The car was traveling towards Huntington on the road and the driver didn’t have time to react as the boy careened out into the highway in front of the car. The bicyclist was riding the bike down a driveway which has a steep decline and the boy picked up speed down the driveway and was unable to stop when he approached the road. The family was visiting relatives at the home at the time of the incident. The family lives in Castle Dale. The boy was riding an unfamiliar bike borrowed from his cousins who live at the home.
The victim was identified as 7 year old Jared Anderson from Castle Dale. He turned 7 on Aug. 3. He is the son of Mark and Amber Anderson of Castle Dale.
UHP spokesperson Joe Dougherty reported that the vehicle’s driver stated he was going approximately 50 mph when the boy rode in front of the car. Anderson died at the scene.
Lt. Bennion from the Utah Highway patrol said, “This incident is a tragic accident. We have had two fatalities this week with autos and pedistrians and now this accident. The other two were preventable incidents. This was an accident. In the other accident in the construction zone, the flagger was in a well lit area when she was hit. People need to slow down through the construction zones and be aware. Don’t drive impaired. Those construction cones are there for a reason to protect the construction workers and drivers need to pay attention through those construction zones. Slow down and be aware of what’s going on around you.”
